Just completed my PADI open water diving cert, and i'm now looking at getting some equipment. Just wondered if anyone had any advice on equipment and what makes etc are best?

Cheers in advance

Hi there

Snorkel Scuba Pro Shotgun 2 is by far the best, it's a little short but easiest by far to clear, l am not a fan of most split fins as they are bollocks, however the Atomic Split fins are very good as they are stiffer, as for Masks a good Silicone frame one is good

With regards equipment you wont go far wrong with any of the following
ScubaPro, Oceanic, Mares, Atomic, Apex there are others but these are the big ones,

With regards computers Suunnto or Mares, l tend to stay away from Uwvatec as i do not trust them or there ethics

Any other questions feel free to fire away

I'm a open water diver.... just clocked up 8 dives (4 in Jamaica last month)

I was recommended by the Dive instructor to go for Mares fins as there the best.

I'm looking to get myself a decent mask and set of fins.

As he says, however, bear in mind that BCDs and Regs need yearly servicing at least which is a cost you will have to bear in mind.
Unless you are planning to dive lots, rental is probably your best bet, particularly if you dive at the same place, the equipment won't change so you'll soon get used to it.

We've (Mrs and I) got Suunto Stingers, they are great little computers you can wear as a watch (albeit a big watch), which is great on holidays, less likely to leave it somewhere
Again, changing batteries on some (like the stinger) means they have to go back to manufacturer, more recent computers allow end-user battery changes which is obviously cheaper, I think ours are Ł40 a shot, every couple of years, but again, depends on how often you dive.

Don't buy online whatever you do, go to a shop, try things on, get a feel for where the various toggles/releases are on the BCD and drysuit if you're getting one.
Try as many wetsuits as you can til you find one that fits, etc...

Enjoy the experience, it's a great sport

We've got Mares Avanti Quattros, nice fins but quite big, problem with fins is that some have power and poor fine control, others have low power and good control, depending on where/what you dive different fins can be more or less suitable
