Default Remember when??

Just for a minute, forget everything stressful and read this...

Close your eyes and go back in time...

Before the Internet...

Before semi-automatics, joyriders and crack....

Before SEGA or Super Nintendo...

Way back...

I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park.
The corner shop.
Hopscotch.
Butterscotch.
Skipping.
Handstands.
Football with an old can.
Fingerbob.

Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace.

Roly Poly.
Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams.
The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.
Bazooka Joe bubble gum.

An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune.
Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neapolitan or perhaps screwball.

Wait...

Watching Saturday morning cartoons, short commercials or the flicks.
Children's Film Foundation, The Double Deckers, Red Hand Gang,
Tomorrow People, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? – or staying up for Doctor Who.

When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.

Earwigs, wasps, stinging nettles and bee stings.
Sticky fingers.
Playing Marbles. Ball bearings. Big 'uns and Little 'uns.
Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro.
Climbing trees.
Making igloos out of snow banks.

Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.
Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.
Spinning around on roundabouts, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
Being tired from playing....remember that?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
Choppers and Grifters.

Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops. Vimto and Jubbly lollies

Remember when...

There were two types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green Flash
The only time you wore them at School was for P.E. And they were called gym shoes or if you are older plimsoles
You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents.
It wasn't odd to have two or three 'best' friends.

You didn't sleep a wink on Christmas Eve.

When nobody owned a pure-bred dog.

When 25p was decent pocket money
Curly Whirlys. Space Dust. Toffo's.
Top Trumps.
When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.
When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.

When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving pupil at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc.

Remember when....

Decisions were made by going "Ip, Dip, Dog Sh!t"
Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in Monopoly

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs.
And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.

It was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event.
Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a catapult.

Nobody was prettier than Mum.
Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.
Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.

you honestly think most kids under 10 or so are really aware of those issues, or dont do those things any more? course they do!

and if you were doing most them things past 8 or 9 even back in the day, you was a bit of a saddo really

My kids don't cuz I won't let them out of my sight mate, call me paranoid if you wish, But I won't let my kids go off and do the things I did because I don't feel safe letting them out.

I certainly don't remember kids telling teachers in my school to F**k off etc, they do in the primary schools now, let alone what ever secondary schools are called now...

maybe I was a saddo mate, but I was a happy one, and it didn't do me any harm

wicked read mate, and i couldn't agree more... Me and the mrs have got our first kiddie on the way and to be honest it is a bit scary! We live in a house in the neighborhood where I grew up, and it is deffinately not the same..
We used to go exploring up the woods or down the brook by ourselves!!! you wouldn't dream of letting a child do that now without an adult being there! and even then theres still fu*king chavs who dont give a flying fu*k about anyone else and think they are gods gift....

society today is a very scary thing..

Great thread though..

Does make you wonder if kids thesedays will be able to look in years to come, like we are now, and say the same thing?

My childhood was great - I wanted for virtually nothing, and have so many fond memories of being young, riding bikes in the street, playing games, etc etc - kids on thw whole just don't do that anymore. It seems more and more now simply sit in their rooms killing things on computer consoles like Playstations and xbox's, or hang about on street corners scaring old folk...

I saw two kids the other day, 8/9/10 roughly, riding thier bikes on the green near my house. I thought what a rare sight these days - kids actually and simply just playing together : how nice! Then one told the other to fuck off and the other retorted back that he was a cunt :rolls:

Funny in this case yes, but when you think about it, it's pretty depressing!

Im 27 and I can remember a kid getting told off for talking when we was sitting on the rug getting read a story when we was 8.
He got up, stuck the nut on the female teacher and put her clean on her ass.
Thats nigh on 20years ago...

I remember in primary school one of the girls getting up on the table and stripping off in front of everyone. She became a prostitute in later life actually.

I remember tons of deliberate racism from the youngest primary school days.

I remember kids using weapons in fights even in primary school.

And once on to senior school, which is still over 10years ago, I remember all that but magnified hugely.

So unless you talking about PROPERLY ages ago, shit aint changed much at all.

Kids still arnt aware when they under 10 of most of lifes issues, and they always have been violent badly behaved cunts

I'm glad I didnt stay where you did fella, lol

Maybe the stuff that goes on nowadays did happen when we were all wee, but maybe we were just too wee to realise???

But I never came across any pupil at school doing anything like headbutting a teacher.

I don't have any kids, but have a younger brother who's 20, and the amount of stuff he got away with at school compared to me was unreal.

And with my parents too. No respect whatsoever. That's the problem nowadays, kids have no respect for anything. I was shit scared of my mum and dad when I was wee - why??? Cos if I did anything out of turn I'd get my arse battered! We don't get to hit kids these days, which is a load of shite! They learn after a while they'll just get told off, or grounded, and even then, most parents just give in and let 'em off. But you never forget a sore arse!!

Anyway, I'm ruining a great, nostalgic post. Fab to read all that and remember it all. Sad at the same time knowing we'll never have it again. School days really were the best of our lives, and we never listened to any of the olds when they told us that!

i agree that shit still happened 10 or 15 or 20 years back, i can rmember a kid getting stabbed witha compas ans hit at school, i once battered fuck out of some kid with a wooden cane, fuck me the fights i got into outside school aswell!! there were kids running about with knives and scissors and shit when i was a kid, but im only 20 i guess...wernt that long ago. i do feel like its getting more serious now though, and i sure as fuck wouldnt let a kid do some of the stuff i used to do, going on bike rids 5 or 6 miles away, going down the old coal mine and fucking about round there etc, just for fear of all the sick fucks about, and chavs just loving giving innocent people a kicking. i had some scary times with gangs and stuff in school, christ knows what living on a rough council estate is like now!!!

good thread though, you missed one thing though!

those were the days

but it's those of us that grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's that are now to blame for all of the troubles in this country through our liberalism and apathy that mean that kids do not get the same good times as we had
