Default PassionBMW.com- E39 BMW questions- Owners/Techs, help please

I got a E39 525TDS, and its a nice car (even if I dont think I can afford to keep it ) though I have a few questions...

Unless cars totally warmed up (it seems) it does the diesel smoke screen business when you boot it. Fairly noticable. Ok once been driving a while tho. That normal? Ive never owned a diesel barrign hire cars, so no idea.
Someone said to clean the AFM and thatd help?

Slight shuddering through the wheel when braking hard. Warped disks? It passed an MOT with just advisory on front tyre so cant be anything much, can it?

Yellow warning light has came on on dash, orange/yellow circle with a semi circle of the same colour either side. No writing etc on it. That ABS? Ive seen identical lights on other cars but always said ABS inside em, but is this same warning?
Whats likely to be at fault? (ie how fook do i get light off )

Think thats it. Wish it wasnt so nice, makes it harder to get rid

Hi Stavros

The diesel smoke screen is normal with a diesel - you choose it! Might need looking into by a pro?

The slight shuddering under braking is a common problem in a e39, it is often evident without braking at around 60-70ish, and is simply known as the front end shimmy.

the easiest way around this is the lower and upper *control* arms. You can get them from GSF at about £60 each and are a 2beer job to fit. The only difficult thing is lining up the bolts, but it really is only a simple lever operation to make them fit (if you have access to a ramp them you are laughing). they go after bout 50-80k+.

The yellow warning light and triangle is also very common and usually indicates that an ABS sensor has gone. You get bi-metallic corrosion occurring between the hub and the sensor and they fail. Word of warning, don't take one out to check as when you do they will fall apart. Get it plugged in and they will advise which one has gone. Much easier this way....

HTH's?

Oh! I was wrong about the warning lamp!

Its not the ABS one, its the one next to it on the right.

Rather than a circle and a semi circle either side (which is the ABS one), its a circle with a broken/dashed semi circle either side. Wassat then? Brakes again obv, but what? They feel ok, lol.

maybe a brake pad wear indicator - pads may need changing.

iirc from when I had my E46, I think the symbol that your seeing stav' is the warning light for the Traction control. could be wrong though

The BM's have a real annoying habit of leaving the light on if the sensor has been hit by the disc.

There is a sequence to switch it off iirc its.

igyy pos 2 (i.e not start/running mode) leave for 45seconds. Switch off, leave for a minute and then fire the beast up.

I think this is the procedure, or at least a variation on it.

I find you get a lot more for your money in the 5's than the 3's...

That said, i'm currently looking for an E46 330d sport
The only thing that's stopping me from getting a 5 is the fact that i want to do ring trips with it. Not that a 5 couldnt (Incredible chassis for a big car) but i just think the 3 would be more suitable for my needs...

Must admit, the handling is shockingly good.

Its just lowered 30mm on KW springs and 18inch 6-series wheels and it handles real nice, mega for a non sporty model

lookin good.

Did you get rid of your light. If it is a circle about 10mm in dia with two offset dashed semi circle then it will be the brake sensor light.

Someone has run the pads down to the limit and either not replaced the sensor, or not reset the warning light.

JUST tried what you said, no joy

Deffo the light you describe there tho!

Maybe the pads ARE low? Sure feel fine tho.

Cleaned it this evening, looks fucking mint now, esp the wheels, as they covered in brake dust in that pic.
And the fact its got later spec angel eyes, clear indicators, etc etc.

Ill try take some pics 2moro.

Stereos wicked too as it got some fancy panasonic TV/DVD/SatNav touch screen head unit, decent aftermarket speakers, and a big amp n sub in the boot.

I want to get rid as I need the money, but I also wanna keep it as it looks and drives mint

Oh! Thought of another thing...

Im not too happy with the handbrake, its a bit shit frankly. Where on the car do you adjust it?

Ha, the handbrakes on these are renown for being shite!!!! absolutely shite.

Drop one of the wheel nuts and jack it up as high as it will go. The box says to nip up tight and then back of 6clicks (iirc). This never works for me, so i nip up and then back off so it justs misses (this is about 2ish clicks).

The official way that BM bed the pads in is to drag the handbrake for 1-200yds at about 20mph. This may help if a bit gunky in there.

There is adjustment in the car but you shouldn't need to do this, just nip them up outside.

I always leave mine in gear as a safety precaution. As i have never trusted this handbrake.

The symbol you describe is the brake pad warning light.

I think it may be doing its job and warning you that your pads are getting low. Get out and whip the bad boy 18's and have a look.

Update on the brake reset

"Make sure that you replaced the sensor and the brake pads if you did not replace the sensor or pads this will not work. Turn the key to position two (when all of the inspection lights are lit), leave it in this position and leave your driver’s door open a few seconds (between 15 to 90 seconds depending on your car) and it magically resets. If that did not work turn the key to position two and push down on the brake then turn the key off and check to see if it turns off (door must also be open). If this still does not work press down on your brake (hold it pushed down) and turn the key to position two and wait until it turns off. If none of these work please go back and check that you installed the sensor correctly."

Let me know if this works (and which one for each car as i have a e36 m3 and e39 donkey, so would be good to know which is which)

Ordered a new one this morning from motorfactors, and its arrived already

Any idea which way the belt runs on the car, or how to find out? Its a long ass belt!

Is there a Haynes manual for these cars?

If it has touched down, then yes. No matter how many times you do the reset procedure it will think you have old pads in.

Whip the wheels of and have a look.

Fucking car It dont like me

Not only has it destroyed the belt, it took the A/C belt with it

Even worse than that it seems to have smashed the tensioner or summat? Well, I cant see anythnig that looks like a tensioner im used to, but I found this lying in the bay behind the headlight...

To make it worse I seem to have a fookin oil leak too Oh well, all fairly minor stuff, just FUCKING annoying At least whoever the new owner will be is safe in the knowlege any niggly little problems have already happened

I took a few quick snaps when I was looking at the shredded belt too, tis a cool looking car, just needs a M/Sport front bumper IMO...

Heres the other bit of the broken bit...

And where it came from...

Looks like a cheap/easy repair tho by looks of.

Somehow there a few gouges out the A/C tensioner pulley too, so prob wise to change that too

Fuck knows why it happened tho, none of the things its ran is siezed etc, so unsure really.

Deffo needs a M5/Sport front bumper now ive decided, esp as I see they cheap...

Is there a decent E39 BMW forum? Looks like ill need one
