Default Boosting problem on cossie

Could piston ring failure be the problem? :-

Doesn't seem as bad putting foot down from a standing start (although still sometimes happens) but mostly if already travelling and put foot down hits so many revs and stutters, kind of a brrrrrt noise, then wont boost (psi varies as does revs) and wont rev any higher, sometimes will back fire at this point.

Plug number one is always blackened and has a rim of oil sat on it at present, car has always smoke, has already had a top end rebuilt few 1,000 miles ago but not a bottom as yet

Err I'm not sure really, I suppose it 'bounces' a bit I'm not sure now!

Just know the car gets 'stuck' definitely think oil is blowing by the rings, loss of compression due to this?

Replaced it last year Eagle

I realise it ‘could be’ this and ‘could be’ that and probably not easy to pinpoint what ‘could be’ but a lot of suggestions have been banded about - that the head has gone porous as doesn’t get used, the head wasn’t skimmed when was rebuilt, worn rings causing change in compression making the engine harder to crank which is why sometimes it seems as though has flat battery….

We did a compression test last night, all consistent and the same (around 140) head test showed ok, although if you run your fingers around the header tank you are left with a greasy oily residue to me it smells of fuel in there, but could be oil, I dunno if coolant can leave such a film?

The top of piston one looks damp, where as the other bores are dry, is this right? Is oil blowing by the ring?

If it needs bottom end rebuild (which then could amount to the bores being scored, and if replacing rings may as well put forged pistons in, then course the head is off, is that warped, porous, need skimming etc) if it looks like a big rebuild bill it may have to go

Strange that head test and compression were ok, maybe have to take it to LPS or Engine Advantages for a diagnosis

Peoples thoughts?

have a look at the hose contusions on the cold side. The Rear clip my have moved and you may be losing pressure from there . When my one did it dropped to 8psi from 22psi and i was topping out at 6000 revs if i was lucky

We'll have a look at the clips, strange how it can be ok sometimes and not others.

Perhaps give the CPS a clean, its had about 3 new ones over the last 5 years, sure last year was the newest, could have got damp just sat it the garage

Yes, that's the one .

If it's doing the things you're describing, then yes .

However, it could just be the plug on the left hand of the picture has water ingress in it and will clean up with electrical contact cleaner (NOT WD40!).

Alternatively, it could be incorrectly gapped or have dirt / grease on the end of the sensor.

How the hell do you gap it?!

Haven't checked the phase sensor yet either.

Has quite a bit of oil sitting on top of piston number 1, could blow by be affecting revs/boost?

Cleaning the CPS hasn't worked hence I dunno how you gap the bloody thing, as there is so much oil in number 1 it could be something more terminal, does sound electrical to untrained me though
