Yep, I now have an engine that is too powerful for the transmission 
.
I now "think" it has broke a tooth off the front diff's crown wheel, as having jacked it up, that is where the noise seems to be eminating from.
Fingers crossed it is this, as it has done around 40k miles without having been out, and will be MUCH cheaper to repair (as I have a spare) than the gearbox.

we dont wanna switch camps, we feel comfortable with a tuv approved dyno and its real figures
also we dont want to have a hughe turbo lag, no low end power and no reliability
only bother really is that our engines are too powerful for anything but a highly expensive FFD box

.i thought you said it was the gearbox ????
, hence why I was erring more towards the main input shaft (as I have chipped one of these before, and the noise is identical to what I have).
