Big problems - rust.
Reliable - yes as long as they've been looked after well.
Tunable - yes, plenty of engine conversions out there. A lot of stroker kits. You can bolt a turbo on too later engines have 8.8.1 compression

Very Reliable Mechanically, but due to their age, there's a lot of rusty ones around.

Damned good hooner though.......

Try and get yourself a Sport M8,

They come as standard with an LSD and close ratio box

Get yourself a Scorpion on there and enjoy

it is underpowered with 171bhp from the 2.5 in a sturdy/heavy car. the sport has the same power as the 325i but will be 3 or 4 times the price.

i think an average price for a decent sport is about £4000+. concidering its the same engine as a £1000 standard 325i with the same power id agree with you about the price. a few cosmetic changes and a different gearbox and lsd doesnt really justify the big price difference in my opinion. if you buy a 325 mtec touring its likely to have the lsd fitted anyway and will already come with the bigger mtec suspension struts and discs all around. its only the 325 saloon i believe that comes with rear discs but all engine sizes of touring have rear discs as standard.tourings are the less obvious base for modding but look much better and rarer than the saloons and will tend to have had an easier well maintained life with some old duffer than the saloons.
although i might be slightly biased but i specifically looked for an mtec touring for my project just to be a little different to the norm.
the m20 engine is expensive to mod for decent figures and isnt cheap to get just a 30bhp rise to 200bhp. bolt on turbo kits are available from about a couple of grand from our site www.e30zone.co.uk.
its also the best place to look for a decent example to buy.
