sparrows what would you do ?
i have a few sparrows in my garden and a nasty sparrowhawk keeps eating them on my patio, today he had two.
to be fair the spuggies are like little turkeys because i feed them lots of seed so its partly my fault that they cant fly very well and get away.
i know sparrowhawks are quite rare but so are spuggies,
should i
a) take the sparrowhawk out (and is that legal?)
b)let him carry on until all the spuggies have been eaten ?
c)stop feeding the spuggies (they might get thin and fly quicker)
i blame bill oddy for encouraging sparrow regeneration.
cheers nomad
ps only thing left of this poor sparrow was his beak

leave the sparrow hawk to do what it does naturally, its a bird of prey and is only doing what is natural,it's not up to you or anybody else to decide wether or not something should be killed!let nature take its course
end of the day don't mess with nature!

yeh but if i miss it could be curtains for me,
i might train next door neighbours cat to ambush him, i thought a sparrow would last him a week, yet he had 2 before 5pm,
maybe theres more than 1 sparrowhawk
cheers nomad ps off to bed, need to get up early to go on sparrow patrol

my dad's an ornithologist (bird keeper) and whilst sparrowhawks have a nasty habbit of trying to eat his expensive and rare birds, he will still sit there and watch if one appears as its so rare to see them about!
bit like kestrels, how many of them do you see nowadays? they used to be everywhere!

sparrow hawks are actually increasing in numbers due to less use of pesticides in the food chain. it is illegal to kill them but at the end of the day its only doing what its supposed to do EAT SPARROWS hence the name sparrow hawk

Things like sparrow hawks facinate me to be honest. I think it wouldn't be wise to try and hurt the little fecker, you'd probably be in some shit with some agency somewhere if they found out.
Let nature take its course or buy something to scare it off.
I've got 2 cats so any bird of an kind that comes into our garden is instant kittikat

wife went out to get a big owl or bird of prey to scare it off,
she came back with some plants
thats B&Q for ya, playing musaak, you end up in a trance and forget what you went for,
if its illegal to shoot it then i wont, i wouldnt kill it if it only came for lunch every once in a while,
paintball sounds rather tempting tho.
