Mines in the boot ain't quite finished the car yet , I did a lot of looking about like you do before cutting a fuck off big hole in the boot floor and spoke to a bloke who knew his stuff about this , he was saying one of the cars they done does not even need rad fans as the area/ volume is very big and coz heat rises it draws through it own cold air when parked up , and he also said getting the air out is more of a issue that getting it in and reverse the hoses top to bottom / bottom to top, he did say what angle was the best for the rad , I have a big arse scoop under the car with a angled rad all chaneled up and out the boot lid

Remember rads in boots are not allowed in car for racing if any body is thinking of racing in the future

i was wondering about mounting it at just under roof height, then making a big scoop in the roof and big meshed holes in the boot.

can anyone explain the route air flow takes while traveling under the car? im intrested in doing this but with my car 'fiesta with cossie floor' the floor has so many lumps and bumps with the tunnel and cossie rear end etc its hard to find space for ducting underneath the car.

back to the original question. does the majority of air just flow cleanly underneath all the running gear etc?

or does it find its way up into all the spaces under the car? if this is the case would it be better to flat bottom the car aswell?

I dont know much about aerodynamics but very simply put...

You want the underneath of the car to be as flat/smooth as possible, to speed up the air speed underneath the car and
You want the air speed over the top of the car to be slower, this is why we fit spoilers and stuff, it pushes the car down for downforce but also slows down the speed of the air down.
This also helps pull the car down and keep it more stable. And it stops the turbulance caused by all the lumps/bumps under the car.
This is why all race cars have a flat floor.

I have a flat ally panel under my car with vents/scoops cut into it for airflow.

If you put vents/scoops/hose under the car the air will find its way through easy enough especially at 30mph+ and at standstill you have fans.
Dont forget theres nothing in the way behind like a hot engine normally is.

My set up, all self made. I have used an RS500 radiator. The car is a swb Audi sport quattro. There is another quattro using this same set up which works perfectly.

Alloy scoop to catch the air. It looks to sit low but its actually higher than the cars floor and rear subframe/ rear diff.

Also made a cowling to hold the radiator obviously has a large hole in the boot floor:

Meshed to keep anything big from holing it.

How it looks finished off with fans and header tank. Extra electric pump is hiding down at the bottom right of the radiator. As well as the holes in the rear panel there is a hole in the bootlid to let the air out.

Cold water goes into the block, hot out of the head pipes run through both bulkheads and through the cabin.

Drag at high speed,
surely at high speed is when you really need to keep the engine cool not cut its air supply off when it needs it most .

hi andy
wouldnt it be the other way round ,cars tend to over heat when in traffic or standing still ,very rare they do when moving as there is airflow through them when standing still none unless fans are running

When I looked into mine I spoke to a bloke who knew about all this , and they had a car with the rad in the boot with no fans as it did not need it because it had a big volume above it, and when the rad was hot the heat raised and pulled cool air through the rad

Stunning work on the mini! I hope I am wrong but I would say it needs larger ducts in the 3/4's and larger pipe work. Its not going to such much air through them!

The set up in the quattro has worked very well no issues with cooling at all.

I still don't see any of hese working well, I don't know why air would like to turn through two 90degree angles, I think if ou measured airflow though the rads it would be a very small amount. Plus if you was having a large airflow your ducts would buckle as they are very strong.

Exactly the most angle you can use 45 degree you need to cause a natural flow into the rear and adequate flow out of the rear and under movement the air passing around and over the car will create a vaccum and help pull the air out of the car to

Lol the trick is aswell is not to create to much flow into the semi closed area as you will end up with back pressure and no flow through ! It is quite a hard subject really

this what i have come up with taken inspiration from G60rallye's stunning Audi, might not work but it will have two cold air inlets from rear side windows one each side and a scoop from under the car, then the hot air will exit via a big hole in the tailgate and two holes in the polycarbonate rear window, heat likes to rise so hoping when the car is stationary heat will escape through the rear window. the radiator will be enclosed.

the turbo is over the gearbox so thats not why i was thinking of moving the radiator to the boot, as the rs2k was not designed to have an intercooler fitted, so space up front is very limited for a decent sized intercooler, 100% want to try this but will use the standard engine to test first.

also what would be a better option on radiator size, having a thicker core and a smaller sized radiator or thinner but larger.
