spoilers are designed for the most amount of downforce for the least amount of drag! in that in the drawing is an airbrake LOL

it sounds good in theory and it might work,,, but what you must do it take pressure readings from different points of your setup,,,, no pressure differential no FLOW

that would totally depend on the car thou mate

on a mk2 astra or most cars with a rear bumper they have a bumper that goes down at the rear so aslong as you did not go lower than the bumper you would be providing the airflow a more slip stream route in that diagram that just hitting a brick wall of a rear bumper

like this

the scoop would then provide a much better path than just hitting the rear bumper

Have you seen the standard rear panel on a Mk1? It hangs down practically like that anyway, but with no where for the air to go at all!

He's comparing, The drag your on about with the tunnel under the car would be like, if not the same as what the bumper does anyway

Surely the tunnel would be better?!

thats looking good and should work well, im thinking though the rad could work better laying down however as the flow will be greater through the rad.

Then it comes down to getting rid of the air. I think in a mk1 fiesta and mk3 you would then need to use the rear tailgate.

Im of tonight to a mates who has funnily enough decided to do the same

Not spoke in a year but caught up last week, he has a Golf Mk2 runnign a 20v T engine and a boot mounted rad he has brought the air in from behind the driver/passenger seat using a fibreglass ducting arangment then the air flows out the boot lid.

Il try and get some pics of this,

Still no news from the Norweigans, they dont want us Brits stealing there ideas i think.... lol

I spoke with Alex who lives overthere and he has kindly posted this thread on a few forums overthere, hopefully we have some luck soon

what MIGHT help, just as a thought is partitioning the ducts off with thin walls, this helps direct the air in a streight line through the enclosure, helping direct it from entrance to exit, rather than entrance, spinning around in the low pressure area around the rad and eventually being pulled out.

they were banned in an american race sieres on diffusers so im guessing they actually work, saves on sidewards turbulance gives it more of a "tunnel" to run through

might b worth u guys lookin up VW campers wiv scooby lumps in, these guys normally raise the floor a little mountin the rad flat (like ur design pics) with a metal pan underneath extendin forwards to scoop air in, only easy part these guys have is a open engine bay behind the rad! anyways take a look about cos they might turn up some good tips

You dont get free downforce m8, the downforce comes at a price...i.e. drag due to having to deflect the air to gain downforce...if you positioned the ducts in a certain way you could create downforce from a rear mounted rad setup.

its a balancing act mate downforce ISNT directly proportional to drag

i looked at the silver gatebil escort cosworth on saturday and can't see it working very well

the only way in for the air that i could see was 2 NACA ducts in the rear windows with flaps behind to get more air in the duct - but the ducts were not connected to anything but the air would be sucked out of the bottom of the car and through the radiator if there is enough pressure difference

he went out a couple of times, but not for long until towards the end of the day when he put on a mental display

I was wondering if Leif’s car had temp issues as from the Feature of Gatebil in Fast Ford the car has no rear quarter windows, so im thinking he is having temp issues when out on track.

From photos I have seen of this car I cant see either how air is directed through the rad other than those window vents.

This may explain why as yet I have not had a response from anyone – as the problems are not solved as yet on this.

Did anyone ever find out more/go further down this road?

This is something I really want to do now, but still not sure how to get through the air flow situation.

Sure, run ducts through the rear windows, but how do I let air in/out through the rear?

I could create a hole in the boot floor, but would the hot exhausts running near it create a problem?

And how do I let air out through the rear without cutting unsightly holes in the back of the car?

I was going to create a rear diffuser anyway, and I could have a slim vented area at the top of it as per the F430 picture earlier in this thread, but surely that wouldn't be enough would it?

I could also cut out holes behind the number plate and then drill vent holes into the plate itself like on the front of that MK4 Escort in Redline this month, but would that be enough?

Also, what about fans?

And how would this set-up affect the car when stationery for long periods in traffic?

Lots to consider

Thats my car, not tested it out yet so it might not work!

I dont see why it wont work though. I wouldn't have much faith it the ones that draw air through small vents in the windows etc.

Could you put scopes in the rear quarters and have a honda civic rad at each side of the car, thse are compact and effecient.
It could be like MR2's where the air enters a scoop to cool the intercooler, but you would have a rad on each side linked with piping, then have some cowls to point the airflow towards the bootlid where it would be vented to allow the hot air out of the car.
Just use a smart design and not a gay mr2 scoop!

wouldnt it be possible to cut a radiator sized hole in the boot floor and mount the radiator lower than the boot floor and make a duct to aim natural airflow towards the rad and then box it in in the boot?

I was thinking of ducting the air from under the car onto the rad through the boot floor?
