Default ULTIMATE ENGINESPEC

So, for a daily driver Cosworth, what would be your ultimate enginespec?

I would have something that has stupid torque over horsepower but it would need to be fairly reliable as well.

I've ran a 4x4 on a T34 .63 on 2.2 bar boost and I loved the midrange grunt it had!

So, what would be the ultimate spec for my needs and what would YOUR ultimate spec be?

the spec of the engine would be unimportant. ie go for as much reliable power as you could afford

for a daily driver though it would need

closed loop
strong gearbox
hydraulic clutch conversion
AP -330's
decent stereo system
air con

the air con is a must ,unfortunately i cant have it.

Every day reliable cosworth mine is , T34 .63, standard head, 4be pistons (less slap) 27psi usual mods intercooler ect for stage 3.
Reliable it is ,and made 362bhp couple of weeks ago

my best conversion i think i have ever had was on my first saff, standard rebuilt engine, lightly ported head with standard cams, greys with T34.63 running 2 bar boost....was awesome and used to pull like fook!! around 390bhp i imagine but was just awesome, probably a quicker point to point car than my 2nd 420bhp saff with the T38.

my 3 door has T34.63, greys and ported head with BD14's, picks up well but not running much boost.....yet

theres no reason why a stage 3 should be anymore unreliable than a stage 1

mine was an everyday driver and has never let me down

(just drank fuel )

Totally agree.

I'd have a MSD stage 3 set up on standard engine on a T34 .55 or .63, on closed loop.

Job done.

a stage 1 is likely to be more unreliable especially at boost levels above 1 bar is it wise to expect a standard injector to run flat out, lets face it at the age of them the standard injector is lucky to be working at all

Indeed, I cant get my head round why anyone would prefer a set of yellows being properly punched in the bollocks every cycle to a set of greens ticking away quite happily and with headroom even at the top end

ROFL at peoples "ultimate" being stg1 or gunship "ultimate" means money no object, so fuck knows why rinsing the crap out of overly small turbo, injectors, stock HG, etc is ultimate

For me itd have to be fun but powerful, so no stupid power things with nowt till 4500+, and reliable enough too.

2.3 or whatever tall block, uprated crank/rods/pistons, fairly low comp as i want it safe on pump fuel 24/7, external gate GT30 or similar for 500bhp but fastest spooup possible, mega boost for max torque, mildest cams/ports poss for max torque, full on EGR ALS, etc etc etc.

Think 500bhp and well over 500lbft would be possible with that spec, and good power from 3k or so.

Ultimate EVERY DAY driver spec.

Fair enough if scaring the shit out pensioners on the way to the post office with the ALS is your thing

I wouldnt want to spend that much on an engine and then waste it fruiting about going to work and to the shops etc...

Err, you DO know you can turn ALS off dont you?

Oh, and I forgot a quiet enough exhaust not to get black flagged all the time.

Ultimate is money no object surely?

I dont see whats not every day about that spec, though youd be a bit daft to drive to work etc TBH, cossies are weekend and evening fun motors IMO, id drive it every day, but caning around, i get the train to work.

I agree Cossies are weekend and fun cars.

Everyday drivers are different things to different people, and if you wouldnt have to use it every day (Or most of the week) because you go to work on the train, then thats cool, but its not every day use.

Every day to me is about 400 miles a week...

Agree 100% Martin, my 3 dr with Greys/ cams. T34.48 Karls map 32psi, felt quiker point to point than the saff, i like the way the T38 pulls hard to the limiter, BUT prefered the quick spool up of the T34..

So you can't see the actuator bracket on the left hand side of the T34

I DO like the turbo, pulls really hard top end, just do NOT like the lag..............

what you on about mate, he right, all the work is inside! externally it just uses old Escort Cossie housings.

its identical looking to a T34, just one of them 2 pics has had the actuator mount for when its fitted to a 4wd manifold cut off.

the "other" type of T38 has a much larger compressor housing, which is what he meant

And i would place that in a engine mk1 or mk escort whit proper suspension and brakes whit a dog box ar some kind of very strong gearbox and a proper clutch.

thank you stavros, i wasn't having a dig just pointing out that the two different types of T38 on the market are different looking, ie one looks like a T4, the other a T34

but aren't of course

Ha Ha....I wondered how long it would take someone to notice that it didn't have the moulded in Actualtor Bracket........That's because I ground it off....... and then polished it up to look like it had never been there.

That particular engine has only ever been fitted with a Universal Turbo's T38....and yes...all the work is in the internals.

Prior to building that engine, I did have a T4 on the pre modified engine.....Standard Spec + Greys + T4, but I hated the T4, but it could have been a wrong spec T4 that I had, as it was very slow to spool up, even after Karl had played with it. That was when I decided to take the engine out and hand it all to Karl to build a 400bhp + using a UT T38.

My spec to him was that I wanted a 400bhp + Engine on anyone rollers. I think he did perfectly as she ended up producing 428bhp.

Well spotted about the Actuator Bracket being missing on the turbo. Thanks to a Dremmel and alot of work.
