Depends on what you are towing and if it is braked or not

last time i was in a AA van i got towed home on the motorway by their A frame, he was sayin its only legal because the a frame is fixed to the van, it never comes off. its quite interesting to see how it comes out the back, it kinda slides down a framework and lowers onto a clamp on the rear, so i dont think an A frame that attaches to the tow bar would be legal on the motorway...

sayin that tho, you do see those motahomes with smart cars behind on a frames

To make them legal they have to have a device in the car that will push on the brake pedal once it detects its slowing

we tow all over the country collecting cars on an a frame and when ever we have been stopped the police have only been bothered about whether it was a broken down vehicle or not

Any vehicle or trailer being towed that is over 750kg needs to be braked thats on a motorway or any other road.

A broken down vehicle can be recovered and taken away.

Whats classed as broken down isnt stipulated

It is nothing to do with broken down it is to do with weights and whether the car has two wheels raised.
If the car has two wheels raised it comes under trailer law, if not it is classed as a car(all four wheels on ground), so must be insured MOT'd taxed etc.
Got this from a traffic cop.

hmmn now i believe when i car is attatched by means of an a fram its effectivly a trailer, as long as the tyres are legal you will be ok, i took used a a frame all over the country, however i am aware than anything over 750 kg unbraked can be illegal but its never caused a problem for me, i now have a spec lift recovery truck though

If you're using an A bar the car must have a braking device fitted... but yes you can use them on the motorway, but be aware of the speed limits when towing a trailer (thats what the car effectively becomes,) our limit is 40mph but i'm not sure what the legal limit it... as for whether it has to be broken down.... you only have to have a wire disconnected to have a car that no longer runs.....
