Do you mean a starter Ring Gear ?

If so then a ring gear has to be warmed to expand it

When it cools it shrinks to fit securely to flywheel

did you have to do anything else to fit it, the haynes manual says you have to put the crankshaft in a fridge and the flywheel in the oven and heat it to 270 degrees then put them together so that they fuse

Methinks you may have misread it !

Flywheel in fridge

Ring gear - warm it up

Place ring gear on flywheel and as they normalise they are permanently fixed
