Default Arc eye experiences

TEARS OF PAIN

Foook me how bad does this hurt , got caught out the other night While my mate Russ was welding the cage in the car, I know not to look at the white flash from the welder

But I obviously glanced and it got me.

Went to bed that night with a stomper of a head ache and then at 2 o clock woke up with what felt like a eye lash in my eye

30 mins later, im feeling like I have a hand full of sand constantly being poured in my eye, just sat up in bed with eyes wide open trying not to blink

for 5 hrs – what a treat……..

We was welding it for a about 3 hours so i guess i took a longer glance DOH!!

i know not to look at it fook knows why i did.

The welder was on its highest setting too so i presume that would give a brighter arc.

its the worst pain ever I used to get it regular when I worked in a big enginnering fabrcation factory,it just comes on all of a sudden I even had it come on whilst driving home at night and had to stop at the side of the road,Ive had it so bad I coyuldnt see, best thing for it is cold tea bags or a cold flanel laid over the eyes and lie down in a dark room

Arc eye is one of the worst things ive ever had!! Welded a front panel on a fiesta without a mask and i was in agony thta nite and had to go to hospital. My eyes were red raw, and every time i blinked it felt like i had gravel in my eyes
And all the doctor said was he couldnt do anything and to go home and wait for it to pass T**T.

If you get it again get yourself to the hospital, they will rinse your eyes out and most of the pain is away after 30 minutes.

Ive had to go 3 times to have it done now, dont want to fuck about with your eyes.

i did go to hospital yesterday to get them rinsed - but its scary when you dont realise whats going on with your eyes at 2am ... i was a arc eye virgin.

Its not to be taken lightly though - never look in its direction id rather a kick in the nuts.

its like having broken glass in your eyes and the more you rub them the worst it gets ,not good, but it looks cool when the white of your eye goes bright red with all the burst blood vessels

Yep...I had it once too...I was young and stupid, and thought i'd get away with spot welding a rear valance on a mini for a buddy....Took me about twenty minutes, without a mask (Yea,,,,,I know, I was young and stupid, now I'm just old and stupid.

Shit did I pay for it....spent the whole night in agony and most of the next day.

Never done it again since......Lesson Learned

KERATITIS, or ARC EYE is caused by ultraviolet light so can be reflected from any reflective surface even sand, water, snow to name a few.
Having closed eyes looking the other way will NOT stop it as the light wave will travel through skin without problem.
You can even get it from TANNING BEDS.
Get a face mask/welding mask.

I have had it about 5-6 times....5 of them from manual welding (heavy welding on large pressure vessles..the arc reflects arround inside them so gets behind your mask! a day of it getting behind your mask and your fucked!

Once was from a spray welding robot, used to weld bodies (yes lol) theyre the things on the bottom of trains with the axles and suspension on....big fucking welds too big for a human (hence the robot doing it) this one put me ou tof action for 1 1/2 days and was comparable to having ym eyes ripped out!

I went to hospital and they gave me some shite lube stuff...helped for all of 1 second then excrutiating again....

My secret is vasaline and savlon mix the pain is from the protective layer on your eye depeleating from the uv rays...scraping on your eye lid causing discompfort...even the air causes some discompfort so open it hurts, closed it hurts more!!!

Lube your eyes up with vaseline and savlon mix it helps for about 30 mins if you keep your eyes still (fixed) and open! looks funny you cant see properly but it works....trust me i've been there lots of times.

If you have a mild flash from a home welding machine then count yourself lucky! an industrial scale welding plant can do some serious damage and the arc eye isnt even funny.

i got it from work a few years back now, about 1am in the morning eyes streaming, drove to a&E some how, they washed my eyes out, and put patches over both eyes to stop any infections, so had to phone someone to come pick me up as couldn`t drive home now

always look the other way when someone is welding, i never looked direct at the flash, but it cuaght me in the corner of my eyes, Its the first arc that normaly get you. so be warned.

First twice I got it was from welding without a mask and the 3rd time was from watching like an idiot.

I found that using an automatic mask is far easier and your less likely to take it off your head so less chance of flash, well for me anyway.

Had a rolson battery powered mask before but just got this Esab one last week, all the controls are on the outside to so less fucking about. Very comfy it is too

i weld most days, without a mask as i have to mainly spot weld, and its impossible to hold the metal in one hand, welding torch in the other, and raising and loweing the mask.

i have only ever had minor arc eye a couple of times, i use factor 30 suncream on face and neck, and close my eyes and turn away.

worse ive had was the sunburn before i started to use suncream.
