Default T4...GT30 ?

I'm going to be changing turbo in a few weeks time, i've chatted with my mapper and we've discussed the options, but i'm unsure which one to go for i 'll be tracking the car only a few times it's mainly road use really....

Any advice please folks, who's running a GT30 and how are you finding it etc?? are they as STRONG as the T4?? What's the spool up like on the GT30?? ETC..

Dicisions...

The T4 is a massively strong turbo, very rare to have a problem with one and ultimatly has the ability to make more power than the gt30 unless you go for externally gated ect. Also if you have a l8 ecu why not get the msd mild anti lag would be fine on the T4 and just transforms the car

I can't see why a T4 would take anti lag any better than any other turbo if it doesn't have a 247 shaft in it

Because the center core and bearings in the gt30 are different i think this is what helps it be less laggy but not sure

Ahmed worked wonders on my car, the turbo comes in so much earlier and is loads nicer to drive.

Staffi i would talk to your mapper and tell him what you want from it from eg. power, drivablitiy, lag, how much you will track it etc. They should then be able to recomend what turbo to use.

Oh yeah and you can rebuild a T4 for pretty much peanuts compared to having to buy a new gt30 everytime it expires

You didn't like my T4 mate...

The middle ground is the GT30 I think..... you should hopefully get the best of both worlds...

IIRC The GT series turbos weakness is the roller bearing if your using anti lag.

Heat is an issue on ANY turbo and this is why they use the Maram 247 shaft for anti lag applications.

I don't think the T4 on a RS500 would take anti lag any better than a T34 would tbh.

Ofcourse I could be totally wrong but I'm guessing no turbo came with a 247 shaft as standard so really anyone using anti lag on their turbo is playing with fire unless they have upgraded.

Whilst on this subject, a 247 shaft is LH thread yeh ? I have recently read about a guys evo on our forum and it has a Inconel RH thread shaft in his turbo, now I have a good idea why its RH thread but can someone give me a correct answer as I dont want to say what I think just yet

Staffi...it really depends what GT30 you would use? Some should be good for alot more power than a T4 and some are around the same.

The all should more resposive than a normally set up T4 BUT there are ways and means to improve response on a T4.

My T4 is as resposive as a T38 is and Im sure Mike R's T4 was even more responsive again.

Im trying another type of T4 on my car as we speak so should have results from that very soon.

Jake, yes mate i must admit the lag issue was a little disappointing with the T4 what boost was yours running the mate??

Think i may opt fot the GT30, I know a few of the Evo guys run them with good success and like i said, it's mainly for fast road really..

Cheers for the comments people, appreciated..

Euan, when are you testing this new turbo then??

staffi i always thought t4 = loads of lag untill i actually bought one and put it on my saff the only time its really bad is in 5th gear at about 60-70 its takes a while to pick up.

apart from that its spot on and the car drives so much smoother than it did with the t34

i remember rainbird saying something along the lines of one of the bearing cages in a gt30 been made of plastic this is why it has to be water cooled and also not be ran with anti lag

hi euan

if you bring the t04 turbo in early say it's making boost @ 3500k then the turbo @ 7k would be running out of puff
the t04 only has a 3.5k power band where the gt30 has a 5k power band

jonny

that applys to any old garret turbo that the cossies have

they have only got 3.5k power band

so what ever they "come in at" after 3.5k that they are dead

my t34 came in at 3k it was flat out at 6.5k

same thing if you put a .48 housing on that t34 it will come in quicker but tails off quicker aswell because of the power band

you cant have both ...

Thats not correct Marco.

Mines makes full 2.6 bar at 4k and power is still increasing at 8k rev limiter

My T4 is as resposive as a T38 is and Im sure Mike R's T4 was even more responsive again.

Im trying another type of T4 on my car as we speak so should have results from that very soon.

if you bring the t04 turbo in early say it's making boost @ 3500k then the turbo @ 7k would be running out of puff
the t04 only has a 3.5k power band where the gt30 has a 5k power band

Thats not correct Marco.

Mines makes full 2.6 bar at 4k and power is still increasing at 8k rev limiter
TBH mate I couldn't see how that was right, I've seen enough dyno plots to show that doesn't totally ring true.

2.6 bar @ 4k must be ballistic, I so don't need that in a mk2 escort lol

A T4 can surely be altered in quite a few ways which is obviously how you and others get the results.

Because his turbo spins 'backwards' compared to our Cossie ones
