Private Plates...how do you transfer???
basically i've just sold the saff, and it's going tomorrow....but it came totally out of the blue and was not planned at all.
my private plate is on the car but i don't have a clue how to go about keeping it
the V5 will be filled in tomorrow obviously and then i guess technically the plate belons to the new owner? he's agreed to give it me back, but is it as simple as filling out forms and paying a fee.....or is it gonna be difficult once the car is registered to somebody else?
please help

My dad did this on his 4i, took plate from his rover sdi and put on 4i.
Basically just forms and money, then both cars have to have MOT, just go to local LVLO a lot easier do it there and then(paperwork) then just wait for letter/V5 to come on post get plates fitted job done, about £80 if I remember right.

but does it matter that my plate will be on a car i no longer own ( or am registered as it's keeper? )
won't the new owner need to apply for the car's original reg to be put back on? and then 'sell' me my plate back???
sooo confused LOL, it's my first private reg

tabetha they wont do instant transfers in the dvla offices anymore as it was taking too long
its an application form that you send off now and then they mail the changed docs back to you.
it does usually take a few weeks
and almost £100

Only the registered keeper of a vehicle is entitled to apply to transfer its registration number.
I filled in Form V317 and took it to local DVLA Centre, together with tax discs, V5s and MoTs for both cars (ie: docs from the car it was coming off and docs for the car it was going on).
I received back new tax discs and MoTs for both cars by return of post. The V5s took longer though to come back from Swansea, roughly 5-6 weeks. The cost to transfer the plate is £80 or to put it on retention.
Just give the buyer the New Keeper Supplement V5C/2, if they need to tax it before the V5 comes back, they can use a Form V62 to it.
Also, if you need tax for either vehicle at the same time, you will need to complete a V10 tax application form or the V11 tax reminder form and provide the relevant certificate of insurance or valid cover note, and appropriate rate of vehicle tax. Please ensure that you have your vehicle tax disc details (expiry date and serial number) and vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number to hand.
Be aware though that the DVLA local office may wish to inspect the donor and or recipient vehicle(s).
Forms can be downloaded from HERE
Also download Download 'United Kingdom registration certificate guidance notes' (INS160) (PDF, 202K)

If you know/trust the person who has bought it, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
When I sold my Escos, I held off letting the guy have it for a week so I could deal with the transfer.
