As title, will be organising a trip to the ring soon and was wondering what ppls thoughts are on the best cars I could buy to make the trip fun and reliable...

I have been looking at Mitsi Evo 4's Celica ST205 GT4's, for a little extra I could prop get a series 1 lotus elise, poss saff coss (good spec 4x4 maybe)....

Depends what u want, reliabilitiy, maintainance costs, handling etc. for 6-7k i'd be looking at

-E36 M3
-Clio Cup
-Poss a evo 4 rs?
-Lotus elise
-Well speced 306 rallye/gti6?
-206 gti180 would be reliable and handy in the bends?
-Classic impreza in top condition low mileage?

has to be clio cup

the 206 is crap. and not handy in the bends.

m3 would be moon miles and worn suspension and brakes as would any elise at this price.

306 is a good bet.

Impreza would be ok if you can find a good one.

Ive always been impressed with Charlie's Seat around the ring.

SEAT Leon Turbo Cupra.

If they are within budget, it would certainly make for a good car & loads of fun.

If you get one fresh off the boat, they're only about 60k..... Besides, my mate has a 95k scoob, which has had a shockingly hard life, runs 380bhp on the standard bottom end and drives like a new car!

172 cup would probably be the most fun and reliable.

Clio by far, took my mates round there last year and it was excellent.

Although it felt quicker than my nova I was still over a minute slower a lap it wasn't driving like it was my car though

Without doubt very reliable too, we had just driven from the uk to Budpest, tracked it round the Hungaroring then headed back to the ring for a day, serious mileage and not one fault.

Nothing turbo is going to take the abuse that the Clio or 306 would, engines are nigh on bulletproof in standard form.

172hp mate or 182, or 197 for the new one.

The cups are lighter, and the trophy 182 is the don.

Proper.

Strangely enough the Clio 172 is 172 bhp and the Clio 182 is 182 bhp

Away from the pisstaking though I was really impressed with my mates, anytime it had been on track prior to the trip it had seemed really slow, after going in it with him it was quite obvious he just wasn't revving it hard enough, keep the revs up in one and they fookin fly.

Handling is superb too, probably better than my nova was with coilovers and a lsd I suppose Renault did spend a bit more time than I did getting the geometry right on their car lol

As it turns out my mates "might" be up for sale, it is a genuine car, never raced or rallied

Not a patch on a 172 IMO. Been in both (well a 182), in terms of spending 3k or 5k I know which I'd get for the extra money. Absolutely awful workmanship on the Gti whereas the clio has actually been put together pretty well. That and it has brakes that actually stop.

Ive not been in a 172, so cant comment

But have been in a 106 Gti, and a 182...

I liked both and like you, I'd have the clio over both of them

Yeah. I went with one of the lads off the ship when he bought a 182 Cup.

Great little car though, needs a LSD though!

I like the 106 GTi better TBH, even if the pedals are far too close together

With a LSD they would be ballistic on track, quite sure when we were there in the novas there was 172 clios lapping in the sub 8.30's

I brought an M3 evo 1998 68k full bm history as my ring tool.

321 hp (arguable!!) will bully older Ferraris and Porsches and will certainly give you a smile. I am sure the clio will be fun but wont have the same punch up the hill.

I have heard good reports on the non evo version as well (doesn't seem to suffer the same vanos issues as the evo) and is cheaper.

Should be good on reliabilty, and comes with an lsd!!!

peugeot 205 mi16 engined motor thats PROPER prepped IMO

there was guys there doing 8m min laps in em and they are just PUKKA cars

the 172 is what the scally wagon was and that was SOOOO much fun to be in,,,, honeslty was the BEST pasenger ride of the trip,,,, but just cause it understeered but never lost it if that makes sence but then i think that was alot of driver input as sharrick seems to pedel a car well

on the straights though it was too slow and if that was quicker then it would be the best car

another car to think of is a well looked after E30 M3,,, bloke who stayed at my hotel had one and took me round and the car handled the bollox and also went fucking quick,,, though that was JUST a track car with carbon seats and fuck knows how much spent on it but he had a ring wrist band as he goes there 4 times a year,,,, so im guessing hes maybe fitted lowering springs, performance air filter and a big bore 4 rear exhaust

oh if you got a little extra the what about a M5 ring car,,,,,,, 10 you can get them for and i belive they work ok at the ring,,, though never got the chance im afraid to say

For that sort of money you cant beat an Integra Type R.

Arguably the best handling fwd car no need to spend anymore on the car as standard the have LSD and double wishbone suspension and a really sweet engine.

I saw a couple of these on my last trip and the were really flying.

Either that or a scooby/evo if you want to continue with the Japenese theme as they should be quite reliable?

I think most people underrate them TBH. Value for money and reliability they are really that good.

I would recommend anyone interested to test drive one and dont compare it to the EP3 Type R they are completely different and the Vtec crossover is savage in comparisson. The gear ratios are pretty much perfect if your using all the availble revs.

And the Championship White ones are faster

If it is your first time, I would recommend something front wheel drive and normally aspirated.

For the money, it would be the best Clio I could get or an Integra Type R. Try them both and see which floats your boat . The ITR would probably sway me due to it's seats, engine and tight diff . Be warned that they will all most certainly have been used on track though .
