Its a hacked firmware that lets you play "homebrew" (home made games and emulators and such like) and back-up (copied) games. Only psps below a certain firmware (2.5 I think) can run it as psp running greater than 2.5 can not be hacked.

dark alex is actually the hacker who makes the programs to run homebrew
things over 2.5 can deffo be hacked. certainly up to 2.8 and maybe beyond now. I've not played mine much lately or read about current software.
I run 1.5 and simulate higher to play games
