Default CCTV (advice!)

Has anyone got a simple (cheap) CCTV setup installed at home?

Reason I ask is someone opened our front door a few days ago, nicked the missus' handbag and legged it off. Was obviously an oppurtunist thing, but that and the fact we are having some disagreements with a neighbour over parking lol, I want to put CCTV up.

We have a window upstairs that looks down over the front of the house and the parking, so would put the camera there.
This is the kitchen though, so I want wireless, and would also need nightvision (car is 10m away max).

Whats my best option? I have a laptop I can use for recording.

Is this what I need : http://www.iviewcameras.co.uk/IV_GP_...stemsdeals.htm

Have no idea about this kinda stuff really, are any makes better than others, anything to look out for etc?

cheers ia

actually having said that, ive just read the cameras cant be run off battery (obvious i suppose) so maybe wired be more suitable (and cheaper) as I could then just run one USB lead to the laptop which should provide power as well?

Going to have one installed by a neighbour who works on installing security equipment and repairs. Installing an IR camera with a TV link plus a recorder.

And yes, they do run off mains.

You cant have one that records or views public property/rights of way, ie the road.

Several reasons, google it

I know one of them is to do with the data protection act. Anybody you potentially record can send you a nominal fee and legally request a copy of the data ( film ) you hold of them and you HAVE to find it and give them a copy.

Just tell anyone who wants a copy that it would be too expensive and time consuming then you don't have to give it to them unless they pay a charge you set.

I'll try and find the exact details and wording in the freedom of information act

A reasonable 'admin' charge is £10.

I work with sensitive data all day every day

Cheers , will pop to costco!

Not worried about the legal side of things, its a private estate at the moment and besides the camera wont be visible anyway. But thank you for the warning anyway, im not being arrogant, just would prefer to take my chances on that than get robbed again!!

For the purpose of CCTV NO estate is private, unless you go through a barrier that is there 24 hours a day.
By the way all estates by law have to have a certain number of houses owned by local authority, planning permission cannot be gained otherwise.

we have a 4 camera system with a 160 gig DVR. All in all, it has cost under £500 and already been useful, aswell as probably stopping a few crimes as its all on show. we had a bike stolen, the local police said the picture was clearer than the towns cctv and the cooper reconised him straight away. Also someone "tried" vandalising my old car. Again once they realised they have made no further attemps. Buy a decent camera and mount it outside the house with IR light and you should get good pictures if you choose the right lense. You will find if you mount it inside the windiw the IR light will reflact off the glass and the picture will be poor.

RSVAN that picture aint that clear theres no way you will reconise a person if you needed to, ideally you need it much clearer and need the face to cover a fair whach of the screen.

pmsl at the idea of running CCTV from a laptop.. video footage takes up major hard disk space

30 minutes of video can be a lot of space depending upon how its coded

the cameras were all off ebay. £50 each, 320tvl ones with 52 IR leds have been fine for the past 2 years i have had them. Have different lense sizes depending on distanct etc.

The DVR was from a company called security consultancy and technical ltd and was £211, just seen its actually got a 250G harddrive.

drum of cable from ebay and made all leads very cheaply.
