I always thought TVR's looked and sounded great, but apart from the usual stuff people say about them breaking down every five min, has anyone driven one and would you own one?

Couple of my mates own them. One has never had any problems with it and the other had to join the RAC cos it broke down every time he used it

so are they just REALLY REALLY badly made then?
do they use cheap compononents?- I doubt this since they are meant to be silly fast so would be made from decent things I guess??
do they use really unskilled workman or do they just drag people off the streets to put them together overnight?

I have had lots of fords, from mk1 and 2 escorts, to cossies to an RS500, but now have a TVR, a 5ltr Chimeara!
The TVR has been no less reliable, but is a LOT quicker...and as for the noise, well............
In fact, maybe looking at changing it for a Cerbera!
Just my opinion before anyone has a go!

It is AWESOME![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)

This was the reply I got when I posted this thread a couple of months ago....I was really tempted to go for a 4.5lt Cerbera, and I absolutely love the shape/styling.......I drove this one in the pictures and can tell you that the performance (acceleration) was quicker than my 428bhp Cosworth. The sound is fantastic........But I listened to alot of people and did alot of research on them via various web sites, and came to the conclusion that even though I could afford the car, I probably couldn't afford the maintenance costs which are quite high on these cars and that's without any unforseen failures.......of which there seems to be quite alot.
Starter Motors are good for a couple of years max, as are the alternators.
Valves have to be shimmed every other year which is a major job on the AJP V8.
Diff's have lots of problems......
Suspension Component and Bush Failure is quite common.
Leaking doors/screens lead to damp and smelly carpets which if you want to keep looking as good as the rest of the car cost's alot on replacements.
.....................
As for the Tuscan, which is now reaching very reasonable prices, there's obviously the major design problem with the Valve Arrangement, and Cam Shafts........In original design they are good for about 20,000 miles max, before you will need a rebuild. Once rebuilt by someone like TVR Power, who fit upgraded items, then the engines should do about 40,000k which is reasonable for an engine of this type.
HERES THE COMMENTS I GOT WHEN I MENTIONED I WAS CONSIDERING A TVR.
https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...013&highlight=
And Obviously I ended up buying the M5....which is more of an everyday car, and not a quick as a 4.5ltr Cerbera.........but a lot more reliable.
But On Looks and Performance.......TVR Wins Hands Down.
But look at one very closely, and you'll soon see the lack of build quality compared to modern production cars.

And probably one of the most relieable TVR's........due to the engine.
I know they had to move on from the Rover V8, but I'm not sure the AJP engines were the way to go....not enough developement for a production car.
IMO : They should have sourced an engine from another manufacturer with full development.......Viper V10 for the Cerbera's, BMW 6 Cylinder M-Power for the Tuscan.
On Second Thoughts....Viper V10 for all of them.....

Rover V8 Engined Cars are a damned site more reliable than the AJP Engines. Not saying they're better from a power point of view, but just look at all the problems compared to the Tried and Tested Rover Lump.
I'd rather have an AJP engined car any day..........If it was as reliable as the Rover Lump.

Overpriced? Don't know how many other supercars/sportscars you can get with that spec for fuck all in the way of money.
Just remember an Aston Martin or a Ferrari is over 70k more. Is it worth it because it 'won't' break down? is it fuck.

It just seemed disappointing to me, can't remember what it was but cost him Ł25K about three years ago, may of been cerbera, had what looked like a rover v8 engine and a T5 gearbox.
Just can't see what all the fuss is about.
