Speak to energywatch, they will be able to advise you. Don't let thenm push you around, if they are at fault in not reading the meter, but you do ligitamately owe them the money, pay it back in installments.

Check the meter reading yourself. It's easy to do against the bills. You should check them each time they send you a bill. If they estimate it, ring them up and tell them what it is, then you can't fall behind.

Paul is right about installments, but to say it is for 29 days is not really right. If you have not been checking the estimated bills over the past however many months, then that will be your problem.

We had the same problem with N Power. Kept sending estimated bills then I checked the meter one day and they were well out. Wanted like £400 plus off me!! The annoying thing is, according to current legislation (so I read somewhere) your gas or electricity supllier is not legally obliged to read your meter more than once every 24 months which sucks big time. Some companies do it regularly some don't.
I read mine every time a bill comes now cos I trust no-one

I did that at my old office.

British gas wanted over £220 on an estimated bill, so i went to the old building and had a look at the meter, they were well out.

I rang em up and told em and the new bill was £19!

They will always overestimate so always check the meter when it comes through and ask for a new bill going on your own reading. If they want to come a check it let them.

I must be having a :blonde: day because I dont think i understand what your problem is...

Even if u missed them when they called out to read your meter, or they didn't come at all, you always have the option to read the meter yourself and phone them your reading. When you receive your bill and there is an "E" after the reading, you know its an estimate. So it is up to you to check it out and then send them the right reading. They always then send you a new bill adjusted with the new readings... Unless they actually have access to your meter one way or the other, they can only rely on estimates until they have an accurate reading....

Now if you just think that its too much based on previous bills, you can ask them to come and check there is no electricity leak in your house. They usually are quite happy to send someone fairly quickly to check you electricity.

Another good way to avoid higs and lows inherent to the seasons, is to pay monthly by direct debit. Its a good way to have always the same amount to pay and the summer bills usually put you back in credit.

If you thinnk you are just being over charged, there is a web site www.uswitch.co.uk which helps you find out which is the best value supplier in YOUR area.

Hope this helps...
And if I am completely off.... then sorry...!!!

FPMSL I think that wasn't worded the way you intended it to be Mrs Frog

I know BG sent out over the top estimations/units used on their last batch of bills as mine went up something silly. I cant turn the meter round in this house as its outside

Just think for all those people that never queired the bill had paid the amount stated ..thats a lot of money in their account for that "rainy day" ... then they have the front to up the charges ...useless tossers!

That could be because your bills have never reflected the electricity that you use, as they have been estimated.

Do you have an electric shower? Spend long in there? Do you have an immersion heater? Always on is it? Any kind of electric heating?

This is a bit of an odd one. Have you got your old bills?

When was the last real reading, and what was it? Take that off of the recent real reading they have taken, and you should be able to work out what it has cost.

Compare this to what they have charged over that time and then go from there.

Their estimate must have been way off then... but the wrong way... which doesn't make much sense as you usually use less electricity in the summer...

last year we used £135 all year now thay say that we have been undercharged £194 even tho we have had elecy bills and payed them every q
so this £194 is ontop of the bills we have already paid witch amounts to about £175+ and this is just the elecy

Mouse, I really don't think you get it. There is nothing dodgy going on here though.
British Gas estimate your electricity use, and then send a bill based on that estimate. It is clearly marked as an estimated reading and you can phone in with the correct reading if you like, and they will send you a revised acurate bill.

So if they estimate £20 month, and after 9 months you haven't checked your actual gas use, they will have billed you for £180 worth.
If your actual use is really £30 worth a month, you will find that after 9 months you've actually used an extra £90 of Gas. (total £270 really used).
So, when the meter reading guy comes round, say 10 days after getting your bill, he will revise your bill to show an outstanding £90. It doesn't mean you've used £90 gas in 10 day though!

They seem to be in the right I'd say, which is a bummer for you, but u should check your actual meter readings against their estimates and update them.

I just got £207 back off N-Power 'cos I been paying them too much by direct debit and it all added up.
