I sort of get the in`s and out`s of it,but theres so many different types of boxes to choose from,which 1`s the best????

Here's an easy quick guide to types of box.... There is only two types

You have a normal set top box that can recieve free to air digital terrestrial TV - Freeview. All this does is recieve and decode Freeview channels. You connect your aerial lead to the box, then the box to your TV using a scart lead, and you watch Freeview on your TV on the AV channel.

Within this type of box there are some varients - some boxes have a singel scart (for the TV) some have two scarts (1 for TV 1 for the VCR/DVD-recorder) and the new Goodmans one has HDMI output (it doesn't do hi-def, it just upscales it)

Next, you have PVR's (also known as DVR's) - Personal (Digital) Video Recorders. A Freeview PVR will be a box that recieves Freeview signals, and has an internal HDD fitted to record the programmes. Most of these have twin tuners in the box - so you can record one programme and watch a different channel, or record two different programmes at the same time. All of the above apllies to these boxes aswell.

 

Oh yeah, and you can also get DVD-Recorders that have Freeview built in. They are poo so don't bother. 1 you have to record to DVD, so you are always using discs, and 2 they are all only single tuner so you can only record the programme you are watching....

Most of em still cost over Ł100, usually around Ł120 - I bought a Freeview PVR in Asda recently for Ł80. Two tuners (one for watching, one for recording - can't do record two at once tho) and it's spot on. If you are watching TV and notice a film is coming on you wanna watch but can't, just press the REC button and the box records it for you while you watch your other programme. Or you can pause a programme if the phone rings or door bell goes etc. Or rewind that goal you just missed!

I have it in my flat in Heswall, it's garbage. I have sky at home in scotland. There's what, 30 channels?

all utter wank

with sky I have 900 channels. And I can watch loads of them without wanting to brick the TV.
