Default Stupid oil question

what tempertaure does oil get to under normal driving conditions and how long does it take to get there?

I just connected all my Defi guages and the oil temp one didn't move from 50degrees in a 10 minute journey. Just wondering if it would take longer to heat up or if i have f***ed up the wireing

cheers

Paul

You'll need longer than 10 minutes to get it warm, depends on the temperature outside, will take about 10 MILES until the oil is at 70-80 degrees, this is when you can safely rag it, ragging before damages your engine nicely

My deffi doesn't move for about 10 mins either mate as the oil takes a while to warm-up hence not giving the car any stick for a good 5 miles or so! Normally reads around 80-90 after that

Also depends where the sensor is, which will determine if a true temperature is being measured....

main thing is to ensure that the sensor is exposed to oil 'flow' at a representative temperature. In the sump is fine.
Mounting the sensor, for example, in a 'dead end' fitting off the side of the crankcase oil pressure adaptor, is likely to not give a representative temperature of the bulk oil.
