Certainly does mate.

Driver get a nice second hand Titanium driver if you ve got a quick swing ie 90mph plus your looking for a stiff shaft,

If slower the go for a regular shaft. But definately get a graphite shaft though mate.

Loft is all personal preference i always hit a low ball flight to keep it under the wind i use either a 7.5 Callaway or a 8.5 Titleist 975D.

If you wanna pop it up in the air i would go 9.5.

Fairway woods is a whole new ball game all depends on personal preference and what sort of lies you tend to hit them off.

I use to just carry a 4 wood as its a bit more versatile

For fairway stuff, I've junked off the 5, and am trying out a 3 iron hybrid.

Strange club to look at, but certainly has some ooomph behind it!

The hybrid stuff is great for giving confidence.

Also can make a good club for chipping with round the green

Personally i would not spend much on the driver and spend that little bit more on the 3 wood.

Not beening rude but at your handicap i think that you would end up doing yourself more damage off the tee with a driver. Plus there isn't much distance lost between a well stuck 3 wood to a well struck driver.

Also you will find that the 3 wood will be a lot more forgiving on those slightly curly shots ha ha (don't worry we all do them!! ha)

And as goes for a 5 wood, i think you might be better going for one of these newer hybrid fairway/ rescue woods as they incourage the ball to get in the air from all types of lies.

I just think that it would be pointless having a £100+ club in your bag that you will be terrified to hit and therefore end up never hitting it?

It's just my thought's but you should always go with the clubs your thinking of buying to the driving range and buy the club you feel most confident with. As for shaft flex's, the pro/ shop assistant will talk you through this and help you pick the correct one for you swing type.

I have just bought a Callaway FT-3 driver and I am loving it.

Plenty on Ebay at the moment, new and s/h

Get down your local golf club and get the shop to tape a few different clubs up so you can try before you buy.

Find one you like then get it cheaper elsewhere.

Ebay is what you want mate.

You can pick up decent drivers for under £40, and fairway woods even cheaper.

For a driver I'd say you need a regular graphite shaft with at least 10-11 degrees of loft. Titleist make lovely drivers but they're not the easiest to hit so look at Callaway, Taylor Made and Cobra.

As for fairway woods I swear by Callaway, try to get yourself a Big Bertha steelhead or steelhead plus in a 3 and 5 wood.

Hope this helps!

Also a few lessons wouldn't do any harm!

get yourself down to your local american golf shop. from what i remember they got a practice bit in there where you can test the clubs etc.. then they'll measure you up so the club is built for you.

yup, im a member of college pines ( worksop) dont know if youve played it but driver is not really needed as theres not much room to go wrong off the tee

also 3 wood is perfect for driving the 8th par 4 around 290-310 yards

My advice is to be very careful what driver you buy...the last 3 i have bought have been faulty as they had a slice built in i have just bought a set of 1,3,5 big bertha metal woods and have yet to try them

I use a callaway big bertha but compared to my mates King cobra 440 it's a bit tricky. The king cobra is a piece of cake to cream some straight'ish monster drives

I love driving and there's always a couple of holes where you gotta give it the biggun IMO

Golf weekend sounds like a blinding idea!

Any of you northerners played at Morley Hayes in Derby? Played there last summer, and loved the course.

Some good advice in the above posts.
Not worth spending hundreds of pounds to start, but the better you get then spend a bit more.
If you play off a higher handicap then you will still play off that handicap no matter what you spend, keep practising...it will get better
By the way I play off of 4.
A golf day would be good tho

i play off about a 20-24 handicap. and i can ping my driver 200+ yards straight. all depends on the player. my short game is where i let myself down. if only a played regularly i reckon i could do good at the game. although it is one game you will never master.

i used my mates graphite shaft driver (callaway i think it was) couldnt believe the amount of flex off the club as i hit it. felt so weird but i managed to hit the sweet spot every time

ive been playing since i was 14 im 23 now, my clubs cost me £150 and my driver, 3wood, 5wood cost me £70 for all 3, all these nike drivers @ £180 etc aren't really worth it imo i cant see them knocking shots off your game

the driver is a hard enough club to use to start with most people will think there pretty good with one cause they hit 3/4 "ok" shots with one a game TRUST me nice howson 3wood or similar will only be a few yards behind your driver if not the same and ALOT straighter

I agree - I'm playing with a Howson 3 Wood, and connect with it well, and it's all you need at double figure handicaps.

I'm a little way off that, although hopefully will be there by the end of the summer.

My short iron play is currently superb and putting is nearly perfect, but long stuff off the tee can make or break my round at the moment.

At that handicap i would use the money for lessons not clubs.

If the monry you are on about is just for clubs though, you cant go wrong with a good 3 wood when starting out. Although i was surprised how easy to hit the new breed of drivers are, might be worth looking at a 12 Degree driver with a regular shaft, you might even find it easier to hit than a 3 wood as the heads so much bigger.

My advice is go do a driving range and try some different ones out, then choose from there. Ultility woods seem to be the way to go now instead of 5 woods and 3 irons.

I normally chop and change my clubs depending on what course i am playing so i dont have more than 14 clubs.

Just had 9 months off without so much as lifting a club, its good to get back into it again.

I'm definitely up for a Golf break

There's people posting that know alot more about golf than me but I got to agree, get a decent 3 wood you feel comfortable with. I inherited a Big Bertha 3 years ago and its far less wayward than if I ever try a driver

Personally I think the only club you should be spending decent money on is a putter, no other club in your bag could save you 1-2 [even more] shots EVERY hole

right i am gonna buy a one of them 3 woods and see how I get on..

so is the general concensus not to bother with a driver yet?

my game is the opposite to others, ie get me within 100 yards of green and jobs a good'un. but its the getting to the 100yards away thats the prob at the moment.

so what about utilitys/hybrids? any recomendations?

a golf weekend sounds good, but some good courses wont let hacking high handicappers like myself play...

I really would try before you buy, i have made the mistake in the past of buying something that was totally unsuitable for my game.

Same goes for Utility clubs tbh. My old man has a Taylor made one and seems to hit it very well, but then he hits everything pretty well. 12 handicap my arse, thats why i never play against him cant afford to give him 3 shots. Think we have only been beaten 4 times in 9 years when played together.

I would be up for a Golf trip depending on dates.
