if its a stuck wastegate penny
then take the exhaust off the back and the actuatir and have a lookk
you should just be able to see it and it should move freely by moving it where the actuator connects
if not just try and give it a little help witha screw driver in the back and try and free it up

ok,
gone out and had a look and cant really see anything of concearn.
but...
somthing I hadnt noticed before so dont know if its new or not.
hard to explain where, got pics cant get them on PC at work
you know where the oil feed goes to the turbo on the top in the middle, on the side of the turbo (as you stand in front of car, bonnet up on the left hand side) is a hole? has a thread in it. looks like somthing should screw into it?
anyone know what it is??

is the turbo water cooled?
as you would have at the top the oil feed the under oil return
on the sides of teh core would be where the water pipes go
if theres another hole at the top could be the lambda sensor hole but you would of noticed this straight away
can u get a pic?

now i think the turb has gone!!!!!!!
just been out started it up reved it a bit from the throttle in the engine bay and there is a horriblr rattle comming from the turbo when the revs a reducing
not noticed that before! if the turb was gone id expect white smoke from the exaughst but there is nothing at all from the pipe!!
any other symptoms of a blown turb??

Rattle or screeching? If a rattle, that *could* be the wastegate if there isn't enough pre-load on the actuator. Or the wastegate arm could have bent, which could cause both symptoms (lack of boost and rattle, as it won't be seating properly).
EDIT: to slow

Undue the down pipe and have a look like Stu has said odds on hes right though.
If its not that which i am sure it will be, take the air filter hose off the front of the turbo. Have a look at the blades and the wiggle the shaft to see if there is any movement on the bearing if you cant see anything.
My old turbo died this way, i had no smoke and was still giving me 2 psi of boost.

the actuator amr is straight and stiff! (no sexual puns please )
where is the wastegate arm located? cos everything i can see on the outside is ok?

is this gonna cost a lot
cheers for all the help guys, its much appreciated, i know i dont come on here much anymore but you comments realy help.

Put your finger on teh wastegate arm at the end of teh actuator and see if thats what is rattling. Dont burn yourself though mate.
If it is, unhook it. If the arm moves nearer to teh actuator than it was, then its very likely the wastegate penny has actually fallen off and is in your downpipe now.

OK,
the wastgate arm moves about 1mm back towards the actuator. It defo feels like the penny is still attached, can here it, sounds like flicking your finger out the to of a glass bottle. if you know what i mean!!!
how do i look inside from the exaughst end? unbolted it from the turbo but cant move it enough to see inside. the studs that hold the bracket on are in the way and i cant get them off???
cheers

Very much doubt its anything to do with the turbo unit
bit of a stange one though....
what exactly happened..
ie: driving, came on boost, lost turbo...
what about split pipes relating to the turbo..take it youve checked all pipes

first thing i did, hose off front and it has 1mm ish movement and spins freely for at least a couple of secs.
what else could be causing this problem??
by the way just remembered, on drive home the other night from work after the morning it first happened. had nothing like in the morning but every now and agian it would start boosting again? would have my foot flat on the floor to try and get some speed up have to brake take my foot all the way off the throttle and when i put it back the boost had returned?? bit shocked cos i wernt expecting it took my foot off agian put it back and nothing??
anyone??

bizarre...
it is "possible" (unlikely) the shaft has split/cracked/damaged in a way that sometimes it catches and works, and other times it doesnt..
i really dont think its down to the turbo though....
if you want, i can be stripped and inspected for minimal charge...

ok finally sussed it!!!
got fed up with it all apart so decided to put it all back together and turn the boost right up, thinking maybe weak actuator. went for a drive and had bout 4psi boost!
but...
if i really pushed on the throttle (and i mean its to the floor but pushing still more!) i got a little more??
went home checked the throttle cable and its fucking loose!!
was getting boost but cos the throttle cable was so loose didnt get enough revs!!
im I the tosser of the year or what!!!
panic over broke turbos....... OVER!

The wastegate pin should be at lest 3mm TOO Far away for the actuator to hook over it so it needs shortening about 5 turns.
The question is, how has your actuator extended itself?
