Anyone know anything about Volvo 1.7 turbo engines in R5s?
I know it can be done and has been done plenty of times, but does anyone know anything about it?
the engine is the same basic block n head as the 1.7GTX engine, but wondered if the sump/box/driveshafts/clutch etc was the same.
also wondered if the front subframe is the same on all R5 models.

From what i remeber when i looked into it the 1.7s (such as the GTXs)have different gearbox mountings to the normal GT Turbos etc...
The 1.8 Clio 16 vlave engine and the Volvo 1.7 lumps literally drop striaght in using these mountings. so basically do it on a GTX for ease.

i still got a gtt subframe here.
would expect you need GTX driveshafts and box, unless 440/480 ones are the same.

Sleeper though, not a GTT...
Now ive been doing checking on prices (its been a while!) i realise, especially as I still own a complete GTT bottomend, inlet and exhaust manifolds, ign coil thingy, gearbox, driveshafts, subframe, front brakes, bigger turbo, etc etc etc (ie only really missing head and carb, and of course bottomend needs a rebuild), sticking with the GTT lump is prob my best bet.

Arrgh, now, thanks to Si ive read how easy the 1.7 turbo conversion is i dont know what to do
My local scrappy has had at least 4-5 440/460/480 turbos in over the last few months.
But whats the bet, now the ideas in ma head, they wont have one ever again
The 1.4 GTT engine is better IMO, but this looks to be cheapycheap too.

PMSL,,, everything about from the ecu would cost buttons or could be built,,, magasquirts are so cheap,,, mappable iginition would make a MASSIVE improvment on the engine
and ill map it for free

As cool as itd be, surely we talking 4 figures or as near as damnit all in? Maybe more.
(see the above pic, thats the standard inlet, plus a spacer plate thing where the injectors are)
All looks enough to confuse me

2 things-
Id not put this in the mag i doubt, kind of defies the point of a sleeper- though that is a good point...
You got the wrong inpression of mags if you think we were able to blag everything for nowt, believe me, i fucking wish we could
Damn cheapskates, dont companies know how badly we paid, we are charity cases you know

my mates stuck the volvo engine into a clio
engine is simple but wiring is a pain as you have to run both volvo ecus and the clio ecu
we still havnt done the wiring yet as we dont know where to start now

I know where there's a 5 Turbo with masses worth of engine mods, been sat on a drive for the last 5 years. Don;t think it even got run in properly. It was a monster with the biggest intercooler i've ever seen.
It was built as a demo car for portformance (not sure if they are still around) and was supposed to be trying to beat Gt Tuning's quarter mile time back in the day, but then the guy who owned it just sold it off for peanuts and it's now sat on a drive covered in moss - the lad who bought it couldn't insure it.
Running 250 ish from what i remember

Wiring is all detailed for the R5 conversion on the RTOC

Ive had 2x 24V senators for that, both scrapped.
Ive had 2x Volvo 360s for that, one gone, one about to be.
Still got, and keeping for now, S12, not highly modded.
Still got S13 as its my main project.
Legacy now Gregs, well, when he pays for it all, lol.
GTR ive been meaning to sell for ages but not actually bothered.
Mondeo is my daily driver so its staying.
And would like a cheap/quick/easy sleeper, and a R5 fits the bill, base models weighing 720kg as stock...

Sounds a cool idea.
I was looking in PGTI the other day and they had a R5 with this conversion in.
What sort of power/cost are you looking at in relation to the GTT engine?
Is it the same base engine as the 1.7 N/A 5s and Volvos?
Could be a little project in a couple of years time for me.....

For 1.7...
Same base block and head as the normal 1.7 volvo/renaults yes, different internals of course, and the Clio 16v/Williams lump is same series block too, so all interchangable from that perspectave.
Gearboxes are also interchangable, even GTT ones, tho allegedly the 440 has the best ratios (different to the other volvos and GTT box).
Cost? I bet I could get from the scrappy, if they had one in, a complete front cut from a 440 or other turbo FWD volvo for 200quid or so so rape the bits from.
Any other costs are just minor, no real fabbing needed.
Heres a good quote about performance and cost...
Ok, let me put it in this way: 0.6-0.7 bar boost, straight through exhaust, no air filter yet, The car spins its wheels through 1, 2, and if the roads are dirty, even 3rd. This is on A520 Yokohamas, 195/45 15. I did some acceleration tests, and while spinning wheels prevent me from posting a good 0-60 time, in high speed acceleration (50-70 and above) it is faster than Civic Type R (old 190 HP one) I can outrun Accord Type R's without problems. Even on standard gearbox, it will do 140 mph, and will get there VERY quickly. On one occasion, at that speed my rear spoiler flew off.
Best of all, I must have spent 600 pounds at most for the whole conversion.
My guess is the above car is about 170bhp tops, as I know how stupidly quick a genuine 170 is in a car that weighs under 800kg!
1bar is most boost can run before hitting ECU problems, which means spending cash.
For GTT lump, well normally a lot more cash, but potentially a LOT more power, 200+ isnt hard, and 300+ is possible, and still cheap (look at the K-Tec Racing site for parts prices), and ive got most the bits, which saves me a lot of cash.

you hav t use both all 3 ecus lol]
2 for the volvo 1 for clio
this is what ive been told
as the clio ecu controls other things aswell as the clocks etc
real pain in the arse
i have 5 or 6 wires on the volvo loom, only 1 plug that i can find and im fukt if i know what they do
so if anyone could get me some details on how to wire it into the clio id be grateful as the car is just left there now where its been for months

thats true, but if he carnt find a half decent R5 thats not rotten everywhere and will fall apart then a clio would be the next best option
plus if anyone was going to do it to a clio its a good warning its more work than me and my mate first thought
plus theres people on here that may be able to help me get the info i need as ive asked everywhere, but im not going to pay to go on awebsite to even browse it

I assume you need to keep all the clio wiring and ECU for the security and what not?
