It's not anything to do with football in the slightest, but i was working in Salford today and heard a phrase that i have no idea what it means.....

Another thing.... being a yorkshireman, i have no fuckin clue why scousers and mancs call each other "chief" ?

"Woollyback" is a term used in Liverpool, England to describe people who come from outside Liverpool, especially those from Lancashire, which is sometimes used pejoratively towards those perceived as outsiders by Scousers, natives of Liverpool.
The term is believed to have originally referred to the people who worked in wool factories in towns near Liverpool, such as Blackburn, St Helens or Wigan. we get the boss thing over here too, especially from blokes in take aways
"chilli sauce boss?" "half an hour to 40 minutes boss" etc etc
Though scousers have another take on it, to express their delight in the delivery of their new shell suit/rockports they can be frequently heard shouting "that's boss that is!!"
so...boss can be a noun, and an adjective

Yeah people who are from 'Telens and that area are callsed as Wools or Woolybacks...

i lived in wigan and about 5 of us used to work in bootle liverpool they used to call us woolies,great set of lads we worked with they came down to wigan for a night out "you lot(about 15 mickey mousers(scousers!) can stay at my place tonight" my mate said
"you dont wanna be doing that mateeee,we might burn your house down in the mornin" one of the liverpool lads said

Woolyback, was origanally given to labour brought into liverpool from warrington/widnes/st helens area to break a dispute with the dockers. It was pre cranes when everthing was manually carried of the ships. To ease the pressure on thier backs they wore a sheeps fleece (hence woolyback). The phrase has since been expanded and is a derogatry slang name for anyone not from liverpool.

Im classed as a wooly back with coming from Widnes !
But the original wooly backs are from the Speke, Halewood and Garstan areas as lots of people were employed to carry WOOL on there BACKS of ships that came into Garstan dock !!!
