Ok, theres quite a few owners on here, what goes wrong? how tunable? [350bhp on standard bottom end is normal?]

I know about MAF issues but i know early ones don't use a MAF, are these better or best avoided?

coil packs fuck up ALL the time some more than others as they vary between engine codes. There are about 30 different engines btw some stronger than other. Basically slap a gt28rs on a 150bhp motor and 350 is achievable reliably anymore than that and its internals.

Ps here are the engine codes and specs

So have i but there are 2 different types of coilpck the bigger type as found on my mates early tt 225 seemed to be more prone to failing than my mates early mk4 20vt with the other type of cp. The problem with the vag range is that there are that many varients its untrue making things complicated.

save my pic and it will be bigger and easier to read

i am using an ayp for my 20vt conversion but it depends what power levels your aiming for, all will be good for 350bhp and above 350 inrnals would need changing anyway so its swings and roundabout really.

I know where there is an ayp for sale which are good engines and i now at least 5 that have been running 350bhp for years

what kinda money?

reason i'm interested is i have seen a stunning a6, everything is perfect, full audi service history, everything and it drives sooooooo much better than anything i've ever driven before. i was quite suprised actually as i've driven a 1.8t golf and weren't that impressed.

Anyways, it's got 96k on the clock, which is backed up by the history only it has a knock which sounds like big end to me, it got worse the longer i test drove it put it that way!

done a search on autotrader and theres probably atleast 5 iirc which have had new/rebuilt engines recently which is making me think are these engines really best avoided.

i can get a short motor for a grand plus vat but then by the time you buy all the other bits on top i may aswell buy a straight one with a good engine, or a v6.

If its knocking then walk away imo, there not a bad motor but if it was my money i'd be buying a tdi golf or similer

yeah, that was my inital plan, but after driving a cupra tdi and a 130bhp a3 i didn't like either of them so started looking at the petrol versions!

need to try a diesel a6 i think..
