steve, youre the next person booked in for "a go" tonight

fudgeass, its a secret (well, all you have to do is read other BBs actually... lol) but i think it would be acceptable to use the word "considerable" when discussing it. lets just say the nitrous jet has 3 digits on it

the best bit is that its not running nearly enough as it should be, and the bigger jets will be arriving with my nos bloke this week for me :P

Pleased to hear it Jim as i know these are a weak part of those Cossie V6's!
When i used to deal in motors i remeber letting someone go for a test drive on their own in a Granada Cosworth i was selling which had a slightly rattly chain. Ten minutes after he went out in it i got a call to say it had broken down on the A5! Turned out the chain had snapped destroying the engine

rattly chain? lol so it was fucked then basically coz they chains should not be noisy AT ALL... lol

lets just say that ive had my chain looked over, and theres nout wrong with it (and its certainly not the original one) and i have no intention of changing the chain on THIS ENGINE

I said slightly Jimbo!
The tensioner was probably a bit weak i guess but apparently they are a pig to replace?

erm... just a bit

parts alone are about 200-300quid (inc. ford staff discount) and to change em you have to take the heads off (so budget about abother 200quid in gaskets, bolts etc. etc.

then theres the labour to dismantle the engine, fit the new chain+tensioners+guides etc. and then re-assemle

not forgetting the things that are likely to break when disturbed, maybe awaterpump or a thermostat housing or something more simple that'll need replacing.

so yes, its not a cheap job to get done

works out cheaper to replace the entire engine when i it breaks than it is to do the preventative manitenance in the 1st place :P

somebody who wanted to be extra extra sure would buy a 2nd engine, and rebuilt it properly and to a bigger spec inclusig all new bits that need to be new (like timing chains) and then fit this new engine when its all complete

Was it really a cost effective thing to buy that over a proper Cossie then Jim? It must owe you the price of a tidy 2wd Saff already

spadge, yes ive spent the same on the car (not inclusing buying it) as i could have got a cossie for. i even had enough money in my hand to buy a cossie

but i couldnt afford to insure one, and i couldnt afford to fix it if it broke, this one's more affordable to maintain (same to modify tho) and costs a SHITLOAD less to insure. and also my car is basically a cosworth, just with the different engine

in a few years perhaps i'll sell up and get a YB powered one, you never know... but if i did itd have to be about 350+ bhp and all the engine built up from new whilst i'd owned it

also spadge, with this rebuilt i'm not rushing into it and spending loadsa money... its gonna be done bit by bit whenever ive got a few quid knockin about... at the moments its just a spare engine sitting there complete incase its needed as i havent done ANYTHING to do... lol

Jim it was only the early ones that were prone to chain failure, the later ones are ok

Dead easy. Have you got a scan of these manuals as I'm intrigued?

Before you think I'm taking the piss I've done the job on my own 24v without manuals. I'm not basing my info on something I read in Fast Ford.

Simple mate you just remove the sprockets and cams. There may be enough clearance to remove the cams with sprockets on but I didn't want to damage anything.

Done nearly 20k on mine since the job was done.

You need to drop the front crossmember[1] and remove the sump and timing cover. The the chain then just pulls through.

[1] The engine needs supporting properly during this stage with an engine support bar. No bits of wood please!
