I think the guy on the TV, (assuming he wants to have relationships) has put so much pressure on himself. i.e Any girl he meets will HAVE to lead to sex in the end. That he stunts him socially. Think about it though, if you aren't to popular at school and don't have to many friends, you may not get the chance to get out and meet a bird in your teens.

Before you know it your in your early twenties and most people you meet have, so would imagine it becomes embarrasing to admit to it, making you feel worse and so makes it harder to have confidence around the opposite sex.
