Thinking about it.. If you follow Dans instructions and get into the Dos prompt (Black screen, white writing) then type in.
CHKDSK /R
This will do a scan off the drive and fix any problems..
If this doesn't solve it then we'll try the other options.

Can't believe some of the confusing replies some of you have given her.
She's not going to know how the hell to do a CHKDSK command is she.
First - What did you do before this started happening? What programs? Any drivers?

Go through the instructions that Dan gave you.. This will take you to the black and white screen.
You will just type the words
CHKDSK /F
and then hit enter.
Doesn't matter about knowledge of the commands and knowing themselves what these commands mean or do.. Just trying to assist with getting Maria's PC working.

The commands that DAN gave her will NOT take her to the recovery console!!!!!!!
It'll repair the current installation to a bootable state, leaving all her files and programs intact as if nothing had happend.

I'm getting confused between the repair installation and the recovery console..
Repair will re-install XP into the XP folder..
Console will allow the MBR and a full CHKDSK to be performed.
Sorry to confuse you Maria..
