is it a silvertop or blacktop engine, because i believe the blacktops had the pats module in the ecu, so unless you have the original locks on, the car won't start. pretty sure thats right, someone correct me if i'm spouting madness

True.
You will need a DEEP ECU, might be worth checking.
It will go straight in if it is a Silvertop engine (literally, silver cam cover).
Worth the upgrade, although it will need your 1.8 waterpump and sump fitted
Weekends worth of work if you have all the right stuff and an able mate.

you can use all the electrics from the car, a chip may help but the MAF sensor should cope ok.
to get the engine in tho you need to change:
Water pump (might as well do cam belt and tensioners while your at it)
Im pretty sure the mondy oil pump is ok, but the oil filter pokes a bit further out
you need to change over the oil pickup pipe and the sump
you need to change the flywheels and clutch over unless your GTI has an MTX75 gearbox (will have a lift reverse if so, if its normal ford bottom right reverse its an IB5 box)
and thats it

Theres a wiring guide on escortevolution.co.uk that allows you to run the 2.0 ECU. You'll need the 2.0 TB, MAF and Injectors tho, oh and was the mondeo manual? as the automatic ECU's wont work. also use the escort flywhel and gearbox.

1.8s are brown too, so the same as 2.0l
mine was a converted 1.6 > 2.0l as well, all the cam sensors, crank sensors etc are the same, but quite rightly the MAF and TB is diff
think the 1.8 MAF is the same as a 2.0l however, but i could be wrong
tb size i quoted earlier was for 1.8/2.0l
not sure on 1.6 size, think it could be 45mm?
