Default Finding the history of a building? Can anyone help?

Bit of a weird one...

Does anyone know of a website that can be used to trace the history of buildings? Or even if such a site exists?

I want to find out the history of a converted building, i.e find out it's original use.

Thanks in advance

Most County Councils have a 'County Archive' where there is all sorts of things of interest.

I recently went to Bedfordshires County Archive to find out about the lane in which I live and the people there couldnt have been more helpful and the stuff they dug up going back years.

And it was all free...... one of the nice things we pay Council Tax for I guess

Alternatively, try the local library, they usually have plenty local information

Your best bet is to go to the local Planning Authority armed with as much information as you can about the building. It is likely that they will either know the building, or will have adequate records.

Best of all, I believe that you are entitled to read any documentation that they have on the building.

They are actually quite a helpful bunch for this type of thing - even easier if it is listed, but this doesnt sound appropriate in this case.

have you asked at the land registry office?
they can give you info about all sorts of stuff dating back to when it was built and drawings and stuff like that, any mods done to the property and changes of woner are also listed

might cost you a few quid but it's the best thing out there as they are supposed to keep a record of everything to pass on to the new owners when the buldings are sold

if it's comercial thats been turned to residential then you might also have luck with the council as, at some point, they will have to change the nature of the building, so if it was a pub and they wanted to convert it to living they'd need consent from the council etc or if it was a warehouse conversion or the like
