Boschman - I have spent most of the day and night with my mate in his SL55 AMG - tuned mildly to about 570bhp. It goes very well indeed.
If you are serious about the new E class though, he urges you to consider the CL instead. Apparently the E class chassis isnt so great on the new one, and the handling reflects it. He reckons the CL and the SL are a good deal stiffer.
Having come back from the Nurgburgring trip with both him and the E55 AMG I would observe the the track performance more than reflected this .
The E class I must say was very nice inside - it reminded me of my old seven series more than the M5 though if I am honest.

Very cool cars and very fast on a track...
But he wants to replace the Saff.... so surely a car of similar Cash. Not one worth FIVE times more!
The 968 is awesome car but may not satisfy your straight line needs. VERY VERY VERY good cars though.
Steve shout of an S14a is probably your best bet. All the pros of Saff but without the wank image and toss looks!

Surely if it's a weekend toy for trackdays in this country, then a 7 replica would be a good shout. Obviously driving all the way to the Ring in a Caterham etc would be a royal pain in the arse.
Whilst cars like M5s etc are amazing road cars, for a weekend toy and track car? More than a bit heavy, and not as chuckable as plenty of other options.

YB engine out and into a DJ DAX RUSH track car
or maybe a Busa turbo DAX RUSH.
As a decent all round motor though an RX7 cant be beaten on looks but then an E36 M3 would be great aswell choices choices

For your budget constraints, I would chose a 3 litre E36 M3, stripped to buggery, plastic windows etc. Spend the extra on decent tyres, APs all round, expensive suspension, polybushed, chipped, exhaust and Gruppe M style filter.
If Jim can do a 9.15 driving like a woman in his, then a properly sorted one with sufficient knowledge would EASILY knock 1 minute off that.
Doesn't matter too much if you bin it, as you could transfer everything to another, and they can be picked up for cheap 2wd Cossie money....
You could also sell the bits not wanted to help pay for the mods.
WEAPON.
Forget all this "Not fast enough bollocks", you have NO idea .

I agree with part of this.
EVO mag did an article with an E36 3.0 M3 (the non EVO version) at the ring, trying to break the 8.00 lap. They didnt make it, but they got bloody close!
I myself dont question their pace on the ring - I have benefited from first hand experience with both the E36 and the E46 variety on the ring, of which there are on of each in my party that go to the ring with me twice a year average.
With the above said, it must be said that Race pace does not necessarily make a fast road car. My cos between breakdowns will cleanly beat an M3 quite simply because the M3 cannot exert its handling advantage over me (not safe and not enough room!). It is because of this that I suspect that people including myself refer to the car as being not quick enough.
The cos is unquestionably a poor handling car that can be tweaked to make reasonable. But one cannot question its ability to appear extremely fast on a road.
In addition to the above, I have an E39 M5 already, which is a little close to this car, which puts me off a little. Further - as two of me mates already have them - Id rather go a different route.
The Skyline GTR33 is the top of my list so far with a few choice mods! It has the benefit of being tuneable if I get bored! LOL

Forget the R33, as 1. Steve is getting confused, it was a stripped out R32 that had been "played" with according to Dirk .
2. The R32 is the lightest and best looking (IMO) and could be made into a better track car (see GT Battle contenders for the Skyline model that gets chosen ).
Also, you have your M5 for M3 bashing, so think my idea is still best for a Ring car. Skyline's make Cossies look positively CHEAP to run .

Not nearly enough between the M5 and the M3s for straight line pace though for my liking - they are like a rash - every time you think you lost it, it comes back!
Also, dont worry, I was already aware of Steves faux pas!
Ref the R32, I quite like them also - and am becoming to realise the costs relating to tuning them! Also wife hates the look of both the R32 and R33! She quite likes the R34 - which I cant afford!
Bugger!
PS - to all that suggest the Dax, westies etc etc - all good advice - until you consider my considerable frame! I am 6ft 5" and a little large - look proper fucking stupid in these coffin dodgems!

Just remember i am ROAD car...my AMG is simply awesome but now lacks grunt ..i need more BHP although my missus will disagree..as she shits herself in the Merc due to me exploiting the TC to the point of it thinks i have crashed so shuts down whilst she throws up ..

evo 3 or 5,
strip the fuck out of it, make sure you get an rs version,
will totally embarase the cossie in every manour with the same ish power.
and piece of piss to work on.
things to check for are, crank walk on early modle, and well, nothing in particular on evo 5 and above.
avoid the 4, its the only one you cant chip loool
seriously quick cars though

Having now driven a non-supercharged E55, I am not surprised you are looking for more power . I know you are not strictly a fan of the M5, but honestly - they are a little quicker, and significantly better in the twisties.
So much so that EVO mag still picked it over the newer Supercharged version despite the fact that the E55 significantly outgunned it!!!! I kid you not!

Back on topic - I quite like the EVOs - they look the part - I was quite impressed by Dougs FQ 300, but I would want probably about 400bhp out of one (just because!)
So how much would that cost to achieve then?
