Checking condition of a second hand head?
Can you?
On the face of it it looks tidy, but is it possible to check if its gonna be a smokey work out shitbox without totally dismantling it?

its off an engine thats never been apart and in decent nick, so im pretty sure nothing as bad as that will be the case, but still worried something like valve stems are worn and it will smoke like a fookin train

For the leak check, I suspect at least the cams would have to come out (thinking cossie head here) to make sure all the valves are closed, unless the test can be performed one combustion chamber at a time.
I'd ring around engineering companies and ask for quotes for the work to be carried out, then check with the seller if they're happy for it to be carried out.

if its on the engine, compression/leakdown test and a close look is all you can do.
off the engine, check thickness with manual, have a close look at cam bearings etc. I wouldnt give a flying fuck about the stem seals, theyre about 50p to change lol, but things like guides are a hard one to call

Purely my own opinion based on personal experience, but you might want to get it hardness checked as well as crack tested. If it has ever been cooked up it might have made it go soft.

As dan says, only special tool you need is a 20 quid spring compressor.
If you bring the head down with you on sunday and some new stem seals, I will do it for you while Stu is doing your diff
Bring dans compressor if he has it handy as it will save my having to go over to my old mans place to fetch mine as thats where it is currently I think.
