Toyo 888's - update from the Ring
JJ and I have just got back from our pilgrimage trip to the ring.
Have to post a quick note on my tyre choice. I went for some Toyo 888's on the front of my bus and my god how good were they.
I picked up a pair after some good recommendations (from many people) and advice from Chip and Si and bugger were they good.
They dialed out all my understeer issues and really transformed my car (and my weekend). They allowed me to bully Subaru's a few slow Porsche's and even a 360!!!
The weekend was great, and made even better by a pair of 888's.
I should have measured the tread depth before i started as i dont seem to have lost more than 2-3mm of tread depth and reckon i could get easy another ring trip in with them!
If anyone is looking for some sticky rubber then give them a try, i dont think you will be disappointed!

We used Toyo 888's on the front of our rally car Sunday @ Swinderby
Swinderby is an Airfield circuit - hard abrasive - Dusty ! - and loose in places
Tyre performed superbly
185/60 x 13 on 6 x 13 rims
If anyone interested in some Toyo's give me a pm !
I have negotiated price for 185/60 x 13 of £47 inc vat

They are awesome tyres in my opinion, as are the T1-R's for wets.
As regards to r888's in the wet....
They will actually still provide extremely good grip in wet conditions (better than most road tyres), as long as you don't have standing water. But anyone that goes full knacker during standing water conditions is a fool anyhow!

No probs Phil79 - people never think of the obvious first
For all people raving about them - can you imagine what the next step up the ladder is like
Toyo's are still a road tyre at the end of the day.
A proper competition tyre can be as great as or even more of a difference AGAIN
Many competition tyre compounds are now getting 'e' marked for road use - all good for the enthusiasts but not the diffs and drivetrain lol

Are you talking about Cut Rally slicks and the sort?

I heard the same from a guy I know. He has just gone from using Toyo R888 to full slick. Apparently the difference is mind blowing.
OF course, there are quite a few track days that wont allow them - and I am not entirely surprised

Proper circuit slicks would never be usable on the road but yes they are on another planet grip wise

Best tyres for road use for grip ive found so far are RB5 maxsports, they are far stickier than 888's and are cheaper too, but they dont last 5 minutes and have a crap speed rating as they are remoulds.
Would be good to hear input from someone like Tony who knows what they are on about on his choices

Sadly regarding tyres it seems you only get what you pay for.
There are deffinate 'stage' levels in grip and control that go up hand in hand with the price.
Those that you mention Chip are (IMO) at the very bottom of the competition range. (or the starting ladder for cheap unsponsored club level motorsport)
Sure they will give a slightly better grip than a road tyre, but they will also understeer squeal and roll like no tomorrow in the hard corners.
Got given a set to try about 8 years ago and they were absolutely horrendous as competition tyres but thats comparng it to something 4 times the price.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me mate, I was well aware that they are at the bottom end of the market, but they are the only road legal competition tyres ive ever used, and still were better than the likes of 888's IME
How would you compare the maxsport to an 888 out of interest?

Any idea how much a a 195/45/15 888 would be as I don't see them on martins list. I'd rather not hassle martin with a phonecall or pm etc as i'm just trying to find out a price for a friend so don't want to waste his time in case my mate doesnt want them.

Sizes are generally only available in what you see advertised 89XR2
The 888 will give you less tyre roll in corners but the maxsport will grip better under braking. You would make a choice depending on what type of venue you were at.
For trackdays and fun I personally would go for the tyre with better cornering ablity and adjust the driving style and braking to suit it.
For competition or serious track abuse your better with a tyre that will do both.
Dont get me wrong Im not knocking any, they both have a market, but what you generally wont find is any of the competition people going back 'down' to them after they have tried the more expensive ones .

As my Cossie is dead, you'll also have a break from fixing my car like you normally land up doing when we're at the same events!
I've got a 6-8 berth caravan booked at the mo, with 4 people staying in it. You'd be welcome to a room or the sofa (whatever floats your boat!) if you want somewhere to crash for one or more nights?
