Default Renault 16v engines...

Any one know much about these?

Was helping a mate out with one that he's DIY turbo'd and its got a wee bit of a problem....

It came on boost and pop! Instant 2 cylinder engine. Now theres no compression on 3&4 but there is on water in the oil (was thinking cracked liners) and no smoke (holes in pistons)....

What would you expect to see when he lifts the head?

I suspect the head gasket has failed between those 2 cylinders.

not a pop or a bang (untill is dropped on two cylinders and even then it was only the usual miss-fire sound).

It was only running 4 psi!

Tend to agree with the others, blown the headgasket out inbetween the cylinders. Had he used an uprated headgasket or a standard NA one??

Eeeeek! LOL! Surely it would have been a better route to have the pistons machined down or changed to lower C/R???

Unfortuntly I didn't meet this guy untill after he'd built the engine!

I believe he was advised against the route he's taken but money was the problem!

So now its probably going to cost him more than it would of originally if he'd done it the right way first! Ah well never mind!!!!

What kind of power is he expecting?????

Nothing wrong with a ferriday ally spacer plate. I have run 330 bhp @ 1 bar on an engine with one.

However, it might not suit the renault engine design eg wet liners??

how come the head to block needs a gasket but the space to head (or block) doesn't?!

Wouldnt a steel spacer be better?

I would of thought that you'd of needed to run two headgaskets unless the block had been machined completely flat to match the spacer plate.....but even so I'd of thought you'd run one anyway - perhaps the spacer plate has got too hot & warped perhaps???

they say only one gasket needed - between spacer plate and block due to differing thermal expansion rates of the 2 materials

My guess is head not skimmed before fitting of spacer or tightened down incorectly.
