R.I.P. H789 ETA 20/2/02 - 21/4/07

Caution, graphic pics at the bottom of this post

It is with great sadness (seriously, real tears here ) that I have to announce the passing of my car H789 ETA

Following on from this post here: https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...asc&highlight=, my Cossie died its last death on Saturday 21st April.

It went out with a bang (quite literally) while chasing Martin Hadland around Castle Combe at the Spring Action Day.

Everything was going well, I'd caught Martin coming into Camp Corner after following him from the Esses', and thinking all was rosy I nailed it out of the corner and down the main start finish straight behind him.

The boost in 4th gear started dropping off (from 28 psi right down to 15 psi) and Martin headed off into Quarry without me:

I exited Quarry and gave it some gas, and the car just spluttered, popped and missfired. I coasted to a halt behind cones/ barriers at the next chicane, and had to hop behind the barrier and watch as my heat shield caught on fire, knowing my car had gone to the scrappy in the sky

Big thanks to Phill 2400 for towing me behind his own Cossie all the way home 70 miles or so

Head is now off to see if the damage is minor, and the verdict is not so good. Not entirely sure what has happened, but I'll let the pics do the talking:

Buggered valve - note the valve embedded ninja star stylee in the Combustion chamber. No sign of the valve seat

Buggered piston - think the bore is also a little on the knackered side too

So basically the engine is scrap again - last November I did this to my piston:

I can't afford to fix it yet again, so I'm doing something I probably should have done when I first killed the engine 87 miles after buying it 5 years ago It's going to broken (well broken some more) for parts over the next few weeks. Going to be getting very familiar with Ebay and the Parts for sale board

Gutted to say the least
Si

Sorry to see it. I know you went through pain and serious expense with this engine. I hope you at least got a BIT of fun from it after i mapped it.

I happen to agree with you on that plan!

But he's already done 2 builds that havent lasted particularly well, and each time its another Ł1000+ to do and this time would cost even more to sort the head out as well.

But i STILL think he SHOULD do it

I know what the poor bloke has been through with that wretched car of his. Its very easy to say dont break it etc do it one last time, but its not my money.

But yes he still SHOULD do another one

mate, just stick a Std 4x4 engine in on a T3 and one of Stu's 30 psi midrange chips, and it will still be quick as and hopefully more reliable.... You should be able to make a decent bit of wedge if you sell the block, crank, rods, cams etc, and buy an engine off someone decent on here - You saw yourself how well Doug's gunship went

Just out of interest, were you running optimax ( prob a silly question!), and were you revving the car quite hard? (7k plus) , as that looks very similar to one of my mates engines, he has pinged the head off a valve a few times - What cams were you running?

Si - there MUST be something not quite right in these builds as no-on should be THAT unlucky.

You have a couple of other cars, so just take it off the road for the rest of the year, and put a couple of hundred away a month, andd fix it oveer the winter.

Or sell me the M3 at a ridiculously cheap price so you have the money now

The only other thing to consider is whether you want to be in the cossie scene, and how much you value your trackdays. The saff isn't exactly the best track car, and you can have a lot more fun in plenty of other cars.

Decisions, decisions.

Not sure on fuel, Super of some description, and quite likely Optimax as the closest garage to Combe is a Shell station. I asked him how hard he was revving the car - and this is why its Martin H's fault ( ) He was giving chase to Martin and so it was 8000rpm or thereabouts (or whatever his rev limit is after Stu mapped it) Cams are BD14's inlet and exhaust.

Great idea!

Phill2400 built the last the 2 engines. The 1st one died of a melted piston, this one due to a valve failing. Not likely to be related I don't think....

I was just wondering, as High RPM and big cams etc, if they are not spot on it can lead to very slight valve to piston contact, just enough to make the valve not seat correctly (hence the boost dropping off), then the valve hammering one part of the seat, dislodging it then killing the engine ( pics above tell the story ).... My money would be on that, I can see some cut outs in the pistons, did it have verniers on as well? Are there any other marks on any of the other pistons? has the head/ block been skimmed, which again will reduce the clearance between the valves and pistons?

The engine build was good, i took some of it apart when we mapped it to do some small mods and all the work i saw was of a really good standard indeed. When mapping it, and using it Hard, it performed well and loved to rev. The engine was nice and i felt confident Simon was going to ahve some fun in it for many thousands of miles for a change. And remember, i came to this conclusion after being as sceptical as everyone else due to teh cars apparent curse. lol

Valve failure is normally pure metal fatigue, although it can be caused by other issues, valve to piston contact of course being one of them. That said, it may be that teh valve seat did indeed fall out, ive seen it on several occasions.

Eiether way, its really bad news and indeed perhaps luck, for Simon.
