Turbos that can survive serious ALS abuse.
As per title. Proper ALS, not quiet popop mildness, i mean stuff that will genuinely give positive boost off throttle.
Maram shafted T34s can handle it fine.
Do these T38s made by various companies use the same shafts as T34s?
Can RS500 T4s ever really give posi boost off throttle (and therefore INSTANT response) with ALS?
GT series turbos seem to cost too much and have too thin shafts to be ok unless you minted enough to afford to keep swapping them.
Any others that dont cost WRC money?

Bit small tho for my thoughts, i know from my old one that T34s can do the ALS thing nicely, just wondered if any of equal or better power handling can work well with ALS (and live!).

That turbo is cheap...
When available the IHI was £2,350.00 +VAT
Its no longer available though...
And i would doubt the boost curve would actually suit a high power application....

We life em at about 500 stage miles between rebuilds, although we have never had one fail...so i'd say they were very strong...parts are getting hard to come by though.....they are similar to the early S7 subaru WRC turbo...but the esc housings etc were unique items....
In comparison the later focus and subaru turbos are up in the 10's of thousands.....

Was a maram shafted one.
But then from what im seeing since, a normal shafted one seems to survive fine.
IIRC I could see 27-23psi off throttle (often slowly dropping, but never off throttle for long) without too much bother once its all hot n fierce when peak boost was about 30psi.
Regardless, was instant the moment you touched throttle, nothing like any other turbo car ive driven, regardless of how "modern" and lag free they are. Was great, i miss it.

I have a Maram shafted T4 for sale. Cost £2k new and was recently rebuilt - produced 517bhp @ 30psi on the dyno back to back against my new one. £1300 though, so probably more than you want to pay. Plus a couple of peeps are "thinking about it", so they have first refusal .
It makes 0psi with my mild ALS. Gareth Lloyd has TWO modified ISCVs to give his T4 two stage ALS (mild / wild ), so yes it can produce more than 0psi if you're prepared to do something similar.

So a search on here mate, it dissapeared for years and recently its re-appeared with a 600odd bhp engine in it!
Back to the subject, considering the price, a non-maram T34 is prob the best bet, and just keep getting it rebuilt!
Regarding twin ALS valves- I take it you dont need a fancy ECU for that? P8 will do it?

i was under the impression seals and bearings wear out, but shaft/wheels never usually fuck too much, as MEGA boost (and therefore turbo rpm) should kill it before ALS actually does.

so whats the crack with the special shaft? i dont really understand why it fucks them quicker !?! surely its less stressfull for it to be constantly spinning rather than span like fuck then quickly slowed when the throttles snapped shut over and over again?

maram shaft just can handle more heat IIRC, but when the stock on is ok at 1000degC, its not too bad.
its heat that causes wear with ALS, but yeah, good point, if anything there less shock loads when you coming off throttle etc as it not slowing as much
id still like to know about T38s, they sound interesting

whats been tried on the cooling side of things? is the maram shafted job alot more expensive? or not enough more to bother fucking about with better cooling on a standard shaft turbo?
rick , have you seen / heard of any bad shaft damage ? is it just scoring due to the bearings failing first or do they actually break? .
with the bearing failure , is it possible for it to fuck them that bad that the blades rattle round the housings?
