£550 a month for the train!!

fookin hell, i thought swindon to bath at £170p/m was bad enough... AND its STILL CHEAPER TO DRIVE IN than get the fookin train

so bought a motorbike, £7.5 a day fuel, £46 a year tax, £220 a year insurance...

cantdo that in a car, and i dont have to que in the shite traffic system of bath lol

may i add tho, in my old job, i was earning more, living in a house that cost about £350 a month for bills and food etc, but as i lived on my own for 9 months and only seen my then fiancee at the weekends, i was pissing all my money up the wall getting shitfaced EVERY night through bordem..

now were married and have our own place, i only have about £50 a month to myself, we still get by ok just about, although it does get hard by the end of the month, especially when you have to buy stuff for work and then put it on expenses that takes almost 2 weeks to get back... thus leaving me with NO money at all until i get that back, prolly next thursday, and fookin payday is friday

ah well, as said, you live to your means etc

We probably have about 400quid left a month which is easy to live on. We don't go out that often and eat at home virtually every night.

Times when you might notice it are holidays when you need flights and spending money but paid leave will offset that when you get back.

As someone else said, 1K a month, I would be looking for a higher mortgage.

Good job on doing the planning as well up front. Other thing to consider is the age of the property as ours is 5.5year old apartment so there isnt anything to go wrong!

The girlfriend and myself have £2500ish spare between us each month, outgoings total £1700 between us.

The outgoings include all bills inc mortgage, council tax, grub etc and dosh for a holiday etc.

How much is the property that you are looking at?

with my private work and my job we worked out i have just over 1100 a month to live on,,,, and yes we find it hard to scrape by aswell but then theres 3 of us,,,, and i still get my old man to pay my morgage some months when im short

but we do enjoy life,,,, a few years ago i was just like dan,,,,, well we had 50 150 quid a month and a cossie to run

now i start a new job IM GONNA BE FUCKING MINTED as theres another 20% to add onto that

hence why i find it hard if i should buy another performance car or not as i remember how fucking hard them times was,,,, taking the car off the road for a month cause i needed a fucking tyre

oh and i also dont have any loans but i DO pay 120 quid a month into my little girls isa ( and so does my old man and my sister adds 40 quid ) and i pay just over 100 quid a month into my pension cause i stopped paying it for 3 years when i worked at halfords

ironic i call myself poor and class myself as a pikey

I Think a lot of people have missed the actual question as Phil is simply asking how much money do you need to have LEFT after all essenials have been purchased.

IE: How much could you just blow every month on clothes and drink etc?

Roll on when I've paid back the inland revenue- I'm straight down the mortgage shop...its killing me at the mo losing about 200 quid a month to pay them back...

luckly I have the joys of living at home..

When I am a fully qualified QS and have a few years under my belt I hope to have 1k left over after my bills...

At the moment on my "part time student wage" if I had a house I'd prob have about £30 left over based on it costing about 1k a month for your average 100k place round here.

I also agree with everyone else if I had 1k left each month I'd either look at buying a bigger place OR having a shorter mortgage period..

its amazing how much money I spanked before I got a morgage...

just wasted money... good times

I still waste but Im alot more careful these days..

for me personally, a grand a month after bills is livable.. I live on me own

my train fare is 266 a month plus 4.30 a day parking, whic seems cheap in comparisin to others

Mick, I hope it doesn't look like that - it certainly wasn't intended to! My concerns were from all the "How much do you earn?" threads on here, as everyone seems to earn much more than me! Yet at the moment I spend every penny I earn yet I don't have any real bills to pay So then when you take most of my wages out to pay off the house exactly what sacrifices I need to make and can you live like that?

I think the first solution might be to sell the Audi as I seem to spend about £1k a month at the local Audi dealership

I think the £1k a month would soon turn to £500 a month with things I have forgotten - such as boiler servicing and electric/gas being more than planned. We also have to kit the place out which will cost a fortune

Stu, I am positive you spend more than 1k a month with all your Ring trips and fancy camera equipment I can't afford that now let alone after buying a house

between me and the mrs there is about £2900 a month coming in on an average month and we live in a £280k 3 bed house

this doesn't include the car (not just petrol but running costs, servicing tyres etc), furniture (you will have to furnish your new pad won't you), the other costs that you have to factor in that are mainly hidden (how much do you spend at work on food? do you go to the pub to get boozed up on a weekend? do you buy fancy shaving stuff? hair gel? posh socks? have you got a pet? it all adds up)

i used the basic rule of thumb of firuging out how much i thought i would spend, added 20% to it and then made sure i had ANOTHER 20% just to make sure

so if i was expecting to shell out £1000 then i'd look at another £200 to cover anytihng that i didn't factor in and then another £200 just in case

also be aware that you can now pay bills by dd of certain amounts per month rather than every 3 months

My bills are about the same all round as Zo`, between the 2 of us its pretty fair, working 6 and 7 days a week helps though. you dont NEED anything left over Phil, if you have spare cash left over after the mortgage, bills, clothes, holiday, motor servicing etc put it towards the mortgage or house decorating again ha ha. Up to you what you want left, to me £500 a month left over after all cost means I could and should pay a bit more off the mortgage, that is just IMO.
Whatever you do mate, get on that ladder, you wont lose out in the long run

Well, we went to see four 3 bed detatched houses this weekend, all had single garages and one of them seems to fit the bill quite nicely so we are going to work out some finances and may put an offer in

Mr C
There is no chance we would have anything left over after clothes/holidays etc. Especially with our addiction to snowboarding holidays

i really don't understand teh fascination with peole going on holday and spunking all their savings, then having to scrimp and save in order to "go on holiday" again

my uncles just the same, he works every hour he can to get enough money to pay for his car (he's got to have the latest number plate) and his holidays (him, wife and daughter all go at least 4 times a year to somewhere expensive like eygept or singapore of disney world or any other silly places tht you should only visit once a lifetime) and so does my aunt

but whenever you go round there they ain't in ebcause they are either working, on holiday, or too tierd

mind you, his sister in law married into money and she splashes the cash like no ones bunisness, so i think my aunt has a bit of the keeing up with the joneses about her

I know what you mean and I am the same for beach holidays etc, if we go some where warm then somewhere cheap and quiet/un-touristy in Spain to chill out on the beach is perfect But when you have ahobby like snowboarding you go on holiday to persue your favourite sport so it is a bit different

Would 1k a month be enough? Fuck me, I'd love to have 1k a month spare!!!

Mine breaks down like this

Mortgage/rent (inc all insurances etc) - £600
gas + leccy - £21
council tax - £94
tv lisence - £27
water - not sure, not got the bill yet Lets say £20
b'band - £18

So before I do any food shopping etc, I've spent between £750 and £800. Bearing in mind that my wages aren't gauranteed, and can be as low as £1200 (after tax), I need to get by on a LOT less than £1k a month! Think I'll be lucky if I see £500 a month to get by on!

Oh and in answer to the questions - what if the boiler/fridge breaks, etc. Thats what savings are for. ANd I reckon if anyone is attempting to by a home adn DOESN'T have savings they are a fool. I saved for YEARS before I moved out, and managed to save up what I think is a repsectable £21k to pay for deposits, legal fee's etc, and then have money behind me in case the fridge don't work (mine didn't - needed to be fixed : £80) or a TV aerial to be installed (like I needed to - £258 ) and even tho I bought most of my stuff before I moved ou when money was free'r and not "allocated" - I still need money behind me when I moved in for stuff like hoovers, microwaves, toasters etc.....

Makes me laugh - some people will tell you not to buy a Cossy unless you can afford to buy it outright twice over, but will jump into buying a house with no savings or any kind of fincial security Daft mofo's!

thrush i think that was hes point in asking,,,, i seem to remeber a post or 2 from you when you went looking for a house

oh and i bought a house with NO savings,,,, we used the only 3k we could scrape together as a deposit and had fuck all left,,,,, infact when we moved in the boiler DID pack up and i had to get a 2200 quid loan out to repair the fucking thing

but at the time i was living at my parents 4 bedroom house with my missus and my new born child and the stress from my old man about us moving out we had no choice,,,, if we never took the branch that was handed to us by luck from the missus old man i recon i would have killed my old man or been banged up for giving him a slap as it was REAL bad the arguing we had,,, infact ive never been close to him since as he actually threw us out

BUT we took the risk and bought a 75 year lease from her old man for a 3 bedroom flat in central london for 63k,,,,, was a big gamble and we could have lost everything,,,,,, we the 3k we managed to scrap together in 5 weeks

anyway the point im making thrush is not everyone is as smart as you,, some of us enjoy our lives and socialise with people when we can rather than stay in doors dreaming about buying a house

if i remember you also got a helping had at first to inspire you to save the money for a house aswell and your also single meaning theres just you to pay for,,, some of us have a partner which means theres times they wanna do stuff aswell as when i wanna do stuff,, means the bills are twice as high,,,, imagine going out to the pub and paying for a mate all the time,,, buying dinner and paying for it twice,,,, buying womens clothes,,, seriously bags/shoes and toiletries,,,,, seriously i advise you stay gay as you will NEVER stand a chance

Ginge - I would say I was trying to point out I was smart by saving first - just seemed the obvious thing to do And yes, there was a few posts from me when I was going through it all - and you can bet there will be a few more from me too But asking if £1000 a month AFTER everything is paid for (mortgage, bills, food, etc) is a bit daft if you ask me - Anything AFTER everything that has to be paid is paid is beer money. So how can we tell if the topic starter can survive on £1000 a month after all the bills? What does the topic starter spend out on? We don't know do we?

As I said, I would LOVE to have a spare £1000 a month after all my bills, but untill I earn a cleared £2k-£2100 after tax, thats never gonna happen, so I have to make do with a LOT less than that every month, and I am talking about less than HALF that ammount - and out of that I STILL need to buy food and essentials etc.....

£1000 would have to be for two of us, and I don't want to live like a hermit on Tesco value beans watching Corrie because we don't have enough money to go out ever, or see anything ever

Hence asking as I don't have a clue having lived at home all my life (except for 3 years at uni which don't count as it was all from the student loan and one year where I lived with a few mates and worked away from home, but that seemed pretty cheap as I was out getting plastered about 3 times a week and spunking loads of cash on crap )

I still think £500 each will be plenty of spare cash for a month, I write every single thing I spend a month in a little book! I know I could just look on my statement, but it helps me to see what I'm spending, even if I take out a tenner to buy a drink at the RS meet!

Last month out of my left over money I had to pay for a new set of shoes on my pony, (I include her livery 'rent' in my monthly bills), 10 bales of hay for her, pony mix, the I bought a new jacket and a pair of shoes - which is a rareity for me, I prob only buy 1-2 pairs a year if that, some plants at the garden centre plus 6 months road tax and probably eating out at some point, all that came to about £300 so there was all my spending money gone! (I had less as contributed £100 to gas and electric quarterly bill)

Phil - What I am getting at is you are asking if £1k a month AFTER all the bills is gonna be enough... So to work it out, what did you spend at home? Bearing in mind you didn't pay the bills at home. You take what your spent total each month, minus the housekeeping/contribution to your parents most of us pay(ed), and work it out from there... I was spending £600+ a month - mainly on crap. £200 a month bunged to my old dear, then £30-£40 a month phone bill, and the rest was either food or pissed up the wall (or bought "toys" etc)

So when moving out, I realised, as 99% of the population do, you have to cut back! You can't go from spending 90% of your wages every month and only having to fork out 10-15% of it on "living" to increasing that to 85% or whatever and live the same lifestyle! Most of use can't do that!

And to those that say "don't forget Matt, you are on your own, many of use get double the food bills, double the heating bills etc cos there is 2 of us" - exactly - the're is 2 of you - which means 2 incomes, and each of you is basically spending what each of you needs. So if you spend £500 a month of luxry items/going out on the piss/cars/whatever your fancy is, and so does the missus, then there's your £1k. But if each spend £1k, ther's no difference as you are EACH spending it - not two people spending ONE money lump..... Follow me?
