...............
Mine's an 855 Auto, I specifically wanted an Auto as I prefer it when towing, the main reason I bought the car in the first place. Mines now done 170K and no signs of any probs with the 'box. If I was to get an 854 then I would probably go for the manual, I know those boxes are super-strong.

Hi
I have had 4 Volvo 850's, 3 T5's. Of the T5's 2 were manual 1 auto. I prefer 850's over 70 series personally - I like the boxy look!
When chipped they can go very well - although they are robust and sensitive all at the same time. For example, if I were to buy another one I would replace all the vac hoses, elbow pipe etc and all the serviceable bits, dizzy cap, rotor arm etc etc They will run when neglected, but not like they should -but when right they take well the mapping then
They are reliable so ignore the mileage, as longs as it has been well maintained and doesn't leak it should go well
I found the auto was good at 70% but it is only 4 speed and the brakes are hopeless so I would personally stick to manual
My old 855 T5 CD Auto

i have to agree with you on the boxy look thing.

is it just the diff between saloon and estate

^^^ correct. 850R bumpers are a couple of hundred pounds - I personally preferred my last car which was a 854 MY94 with reverse I/C set up. With new pipes, tightened actuator and RICA ecu she flew. No a/c slowing you down
Sadly I sold the car about 3 weeks ago
