Default cosworth 4*4 cambelt problem UPDATE

a fluid line keeps Appearing on my cambelt ..but its so defined it looks like its been painted on with a brush..ie the line is straight in the middle ????

i wipe it clean with a tissue when the engine is running...but it soon comes back ..maybe a day or two

i think i have a slight leak in one of my lower power steering pipes..there was a drip at the bottom bend of the pipe when i looked yesterday ..

but there is no fluid drops under the car when its parked up...

ANY IDEAS ...it carnt be doing the belt any good

and if it is a leak whys it in a straight line

The reason that it is a straight line relates to the cam belt tensioner - if you look at it, you will see that it has a hollow seciton in the middle.

This means that the centre doesnt get wiped off, unlike the sides. My guess would be if it is oil, check the cam cover gasket.

Cheers

Based on my own personal experiences with a cambelt that came in to contact with oil on a 4x4 Saph (which ended in tears and 12 bent valves!) I would trace the leak and replace the belt asap.

Mine stripped the teeth (of a new ford belt fitted with new tensioner not long before), we think possibly due to an oil leak coming in to contact with the belt, in slow moving traffic pretty much on tick over and it did a lot of money's worth of damage.

Check front crank seal as well.
Cam seals are 35/47/7 best fit VITON
Crank seal is 42/56/7 VITON, same as jackshaft.

one last question ..is there anyway to tell if the fluid is oil or power steering fluid on the cam belt ...

gonna ring up the garage tomorrow and book her in ..

and jack up the car and have a look underneath...

on the tissue it looks dark graphite grey when wiped ..

i use silkoline oil

Don't use GOETZE seals(ford) as they are crap get some from a seal place that does them and then ask for VITON(high heat) they are about Ł10 each but worth it.
As for the oil, taste it, engine oil will taste tangy, psf won't.

ps don't get addicted to it!!

If you have no joy, bring her up and il have a look pal.

The PS fluid seap is very common indeed and almost impossible to trace if its on the pipe with the harsh bend in it, which it normally is.

mine is doing exactly the same too, so i am concerned now that the oil will eat the belt away, is this the case as it on the outside and just a centre line???????

is it deffo power steering fluid? maybe you have a crack in your block and its spraying oil in the visinity of the belt. maybe only doing it under running conditions. mind you i dont know much about engines

Same here, but 16 valves

Found out that there was an oil leak by cyl 1, the head gasket was raised at the corner with what looked like oil build up and oil was seeping through there.
I had a cam belt cover at the time and didn't notice until it was too late

that's like asking how longs a piece of string m8? DO YOU FEEL LUCKY OR UNLUCKY??

It's one of them Questions

ps it makes the belt abit brittle thus more pron to snap rather than wear it out!

Is it really a fluid line? Perhaps it has been tensioned the wrong way and thereby touching the edge of the thermostat housing?
