As said, with windscreen cover, ie, glass cover on fully comp policies, you can claim as much as you like - it's like a seperate policy comparred to the car one, as in it won't affect your NCB or boost your premium....
A 1997 Escort will be whats known as a 3545 screen - so depending on if you have a top tint (only available IIRC is a blue top tint on a green screen) you would have a 3545AGNBLHV (or 3545AGNHV for non top tint)
Fitting is usually piece of piss on these - takes about half hour to 45mins, but you won't be able to do it yourself unless you have access to the proper bonding stuff - an no, silicone will not work
Depending on your insurance company, your two firms for insurace work are RAC Autowindscreens or Autoglass, and the your local branch in Dagenham would be our Romford branch....
You can get second hand screens for these, but I am always very weary of them as you have to be a) good, and b) super carefull to get them out without a) breaking the screen, and b) damaging the heater element and connections.
You're always far better off with a brand new one fitted by a company as at least then you have comeback if anything don't work, or you have any probs. IE, with us (autoglass) you are covered if the heater element is at fault (we replace screen for free) is it leaks (we remove and refit it for free) or if you get windnoise etc (again we remove and refit for free)

20K+ Super Poster.
And autoglass is the cheapest around!!
Had heated ones in the past with no excess so even cheaper, depening on who you are insured with the company(glass) can sometimes work excess in for you.
A said it cannot touch your premium.

tabetha - that all depends on the insurer, not the windscreen company. If you are with Direct Line and they say your excess is Ł60, then it's Ł60 - if you're with Admiral and they say it's Ł75, then it's Ł75. If you are one of the lucky few that get a Ł0 excess, then thats upto the insurer - excess costs aren't something that windscreen companies can change or modify - it's actually printed on your certificate of insurance
starturbo - Probably Patent Part screens - aftermarket affairs. From time to time we do see screens, and door glasses, that might be a mm or 2 too short or sometimes too big. The heater elements are tiny thing wavy lines inside the screen. On some screens, usually for older cars where the only screens available are patent part jobbies, you can often see a silver - almost tinfoil like - strip down each side, which is where the connector terminals attach. Main reason for this is cheaper cost making em - there's not a lot of money in older screens these days, so the patent part companies make em as cheap as poss.....

Depends where you are really. If you aren't going through insurance, then it won't be cheap going through big companies like Autoglass or RAC Autowindscreens...
Your best off getting the yellow pages out and looking for local, small/family companies, or getting a screen fro ma breakers and seeing if you can find a local windscreen fitter who wants to do a "fit only" private job
