Default Noisy Cossie Engine

I know its impossible to diagnose anything without hearing it but...... when I got my car in November it was as quiet as a mouse and had been stood for over 2 years. Since getting it I have drove it as it should be driven at any opportunity and its been tapping/slapping since mid January ish. Its got no worse but its bloody irritating because Im always paranoid when Im driving, listening to it and convincing myself its got louder.

To me its got piston slap all over it, but a few other people who have heard it think its lifters. I got lifters with the car but like I say it was silent for a couple of weeks after I picked it up.

I dont know if I should change the lifters and see what happens or just wait till I do a rebuild and change everything and put .25 pistons in to eliminate slap possibilities?

However, if I do the lifters and it takes the noise away I know Ill be lazy and not bother with the rebuild till it goes bang, which it will because Im lucky like that!

If it is piston slap, will it do any major damage if I run it till winter? I intend to do a full low comp rebuild if it lasts that long.

What do you lot think, give the lifters a try or just hang on till its rebuild time in the winter if it makes it?

Yeah it is that noise mate, its doin my head in cos otherwise its sweet apart from using plenty of oil. (Probably down to the way I drive it and the miles I do). It uses roughly a litre a week driving it fairly hard all the time and doing 300-400 miles. Another reason I want to rebuild it.

i could of put 4x4 pistons in mine when building but choose to use cosworth racing 6.9.0 2wd spec pistons(very shallow and totally flat surface)knowing id get slap but im able to run bigger boost, although was told a bit more laggy but its proved not so

all the 4x4 were was an offset gudgeon pin, mine taps when cold from the slap and you can still here it when pottering around but once its had its arsed raped it sounds sweet as......................

What sort of noise would a lifter make? Wouldn't it be a tappet sort of tick? The reason I ask is because mine also had/has piston slap but I parked it up last Monday and it was quiet as a mouse but when I started it at the weekend it's making an awful noise (like loud piston slap that doesn't go away when warm) I spoke to Norris and they suggested it sounded like a stuck lifter which does make sense because of the way it started but I don't know what that would sound like.

most 'piston slap' noises usually turn out to be lworn ittle ends IMO...

try to listen to it from under the car...it'll sound quite bad if it's bottom end

If its after yours has been sat then its a chance it could be a lifter noise as it may have drained its oil out while standing and it will tap till it fills up again. Try running an engine flush through it and doing an oil change bud.

Me too mate. I suppose if it is serious it just means I gotta take it off the road and get a runaround motor while it gets its rebuild a bit earlier than planned.

Best start tryin to find a way to make money.
