Mk1 GTE's are the nuts, but rare as anything now.
Mk2's were cool cars too.
Neither handled the best - but they both rot like fuck!!
Thats why you hardly ever see them!

billiant engine.
good seats.
sadly one of the shittest handling hot hatches ever made.
I owned a few of them and always laughed at how badly they handled.
But in todays world = a fun small car with loads of character.
Back in the day buy a Mk2 16v Golf or a 1.9 Gti 205, the Astra was a dog and they rotted away around the sills and wings.

2 mags ( "Autocar" & "Car" ) rated the handling better than the mk2 16v ( although both finished behind the 309 Gti ) in triple tests.
Mine handled pretty well to be honest, I say that after having a 309 Gti, and my wife having a Saxo VTS at the same time as I had the Astra. Not as fluid as the French cars but still a great fun car cross country.
Trouble is, the chance of finding a good std example these days is rare and the ones you find tend to be ruined by lowered, rock hard suspension and massive wheels
