I have no pics but i have cut the full front of the box off.

Also have protected the side from the heat with thin heat shielding metal.

i have also cut off an blocked up normal hole as you get alot of latent heat from rad going intot this.

see the silver sheild thing, its bonded onto back of headlight and makes sure the airbox is only fed with cool air.

Does having the standard air box actually make much difference over a cone filter? I have my air box sitting in the garage doing nothing.

think you can get cooler air in with a airbox compared to a cone filter.

cant be bad. euan have done 485 atw with one

You'll notice Rod does run a filter due to the rather large volumes of air his turbo swallows, BUT.................

He's combating the heat soak by having the filter boxes off in the bay!

imo there's no point in cutting the box just to suck in more hot air from the engine bay

the box is only worth having if it gets cold air directly from the front of the car before it has gone through intercoolers, radiators etc, and then a cone can also do that if boxed in or placed elsewhere

so why would a cone filter be sucking in hot air whilst moving?

Its sucking air in a complete 360 deg area, so the enignes hot, the turbos hot thus the whole engine bays getting hot.

The filter is sucking all this in, as well as the small amount of fresh air being pushed in from the front.

Airbox is sealed thus only receiving the cold air its being force fed.

Well thats my understanding anyway!

That's exactly what i thought???? Surely it only matters when the car is moving anyway, and therefore i would have thought that cold air would be going through the engine bay anyway. So the filter would be better? I'm not trying to piss on your parade by the way, just trying to understand the reasoning of it all.

What after its passed through a intercooler, Rad........... It would have warmed up quite nicely after that i'd say....

How many times have you ragged it, pulled over, opened the bonnet only to be hit with a wave of heat!

Thats what the filters sucking in!

Because the cone filter will be sucking in the hot air from the engine bay aswell as the air from outside, if you have a airbox with its only inlet ducted to the front of the car it can only get cold air.
Ive ducted mine straight from my headlight into the box, and if that doesnt flow enough i will put a second duct down to my 500 grill for more ram'd cool air.

Some one on here had a good pic of a polaris escos with a modded box with a 4" inlet bonded into the bottom of the box.

Rollers yes. Road? Hmm.

Not boiling hot, but still hotter than the air outside of the car.........But i'd imagine we aint the first to disagree on this subject nor will we be the last!

i don't think, i know.

i test air con components for a living, both in a climatic wind tunnel, and in field tests (i was in south africa for a hot climate filed test with ford last month)

there are whole departments in car manufacturers dedicated to measuring and managing the underbonnet heat in vehicles

...this old chestnut

The air box is as stuffy as a cone and more restricted...i would want more AIR..hence i only choose cone.

Thats why we have a decent intercooler guys to cool that air from the turbo.

Remember the optimum air charge temp is 40c..you will get the best out of your engine at that

he's off again

so we use a cone to suck in hot air from the engine bay, the compressor then has to work harder and adds even more heat, which we then we get rid of out of the intercooler into the air that is then sucked in - genius

even someone as ignorant as you phil can't argue with physics - cold air is more dense so has the potential for more power

..my point being its not drastically cooler using the std air box..and what you do gain you loose in air flow...maybe on a wrc car we should be bothered but not or a road car.

PLUS the noise is better and if you dont run a dumper the pidgeons are much louder

Franco- Optimuim carbon airbox for what? A WRC car? So quite possibly optimised for their power and massivley restrictive over the level that doesnt matter to them, i dunno, 300bhp?

No its not you clown Good old internet rumour

Anything ABOVE 40degC needs improving on, but 40degC or less is more than acceptable and not worth doing anything much to improve on.
