Default cosworth diffs

do they get noisy cos they are knackered, or do they ofetn leak out all their oil

reason i ask, is my rear diff (i think) is starting to get noisier. it sort of whines when you let off the throttle, but if you re-apply it, or dip the clutch the noise goes away.

is this likely to be the bearings, teeth, or diff oil?

i have bought me a new runaround so can now get round to doing these jobs i didnt do before.

also, if i need a new diff, how can i tell if i am buying a good one or not

car is a stage 3 saff 4x4

Knackered.

Bearings gone or needs clocking back in to remove all the back-lash. Either way it needs a complete over-haul....

sounds more like gearbox input bearing to me if it stops when you dip the clutch.

can you hear a difference at standstill between clutch up and down?

if it is diff, will need a rebuild. worth having the VC uprated while you're there. think marco can get them done

don't know on it's own. i done mine when i completely overhauled the gearbox with new bearings, synchro rings etc. that was a whole day's work, but well worth it. felt like new afterwards and was silent and smooth - as you'd expect.

i kinda thought it was the diff cos when you dip the clutch, it removes the engine braking, and any loading on the diff?

am i right?

wont this just tell you if the clutch release bearing is knackered or not?

no - if you put the clutch pedal down, you stop turning the gearbox input shaft. if that is not turning, the bearing cannot make a noise

clutch release bearing is other way around - doing nothing without pedal down, doing something and being loud if knackered with pedal down

diff will either make a noise under acceleration or deceleration - deceleration still takes place with foot on clutch (wind resistance, rolling resistance etc) - although not as much as with engine braking

JJ
remove box
take to gearbox bloke with 15 inch deep socket
split gearbox casing
chaning bearing
put back together
adjust the adjuster to set the preload on the countershaft
job done

to be honest mate, it's much easier to give the box to them and get it overhalled fully, you are only talking about an extra hour or so to get the rest of the box to bits and the bits changed

one mroe thing, if the input shaft bearing is on the way out, trust me, you'll know about it as it will oval the front seals and this will throw all the fluid out onto the clutch

hi bud

as mike said to be honest once they start whining they are on the last legs front bearing has worn out and is ready to collapse you might aswell have full overhaul

come on guys these diff are old as fook and lets be honest how many of you service your diffs ,i bet i could count them on one hand

most only have them serviced once they pop when they need it

we rebuild any gearbox aswell all dyno'ed to make sure it's ok

we uprate any vc not just fords they can be any as long as it has a vc

it depends on what you want can do normal rebuild if you want or you can have uprated planet gears with uprated vc to 120Nm (for better handling/traction) on the normal vc plates or you can have the nickel coated plates which increase the 7"vc to 180nm ...... it wont need replacing once you have it all done
