Default Unions at Work

Is it worth the £11 a month and what would be the benefit to me,
I have been asked by a couple of the lads if I am joining but have never been in 1 before so could someone help me out please.

My theory to work is fairly simple and is summat like,
"I need to work to live a lifestyle, I have a job i enjoy 9 days out of 10, come the end of the month i get a half decent wage thrown into my bank"

Cheers in advance

Its ideal if you find you come up against a problem and you'll get the union backing you should your company try giving you disaplinarys. Also useful if you have an accident at work and need to claim compensation they sort out the accident investigations.

You can also claim back money if you have a week off sick

im not a big fan of them tbh!! As steve said outdated idea.

Plau i would ask myself if you did want to join one, what power does the union have? If it has a large percentage of the workforce behind it then fair enough, but if not then they will have no power and totally worthless imo.

They are meant to be a representative of the workforce, listening to its members...trouble is it does not work,a bit like our government who are supposed to be representing us...they dont listen, but they give themselves a nice rise/bonus.

and your baseing your vast experience of unions on what exactly.????

which union have you been a member of.??

i have been a member of amicus (engineering) for 35 years, and everyone else where i work is also a member. this gives us great unity and over the years has improved our pay and conditions enormously.

I'm pretty for the union Im in as they have helped me out and got me off stage warnings for being sick etc.
The thing I don't like about em is whenever they get something its never enough is it? They always want more.

tell that to the two lads who where suspended last year, i represented them and got them reinstated. if we hadnt been in a union they would have been sacked after 32 years loyal service.

You try and hire a proper employment lawyer when you've been dismissed unfairly or you've had an accident at work or you are being bullied or victimised.

It would cost you a darn site more than £11 a month thats for sure.

£11 a month is fuck all to know that if anything happens to you at work you can turn to someone and have a union appointed lawyer who deals with tinpot companies all day long and they usually make mincemeat of lawyers hired by firms because the union boys are specialists in their field.

All those who think its a waste of time are people who have paid their subs and perceived to have got fook all back...... well I bet those same people pay contents of house insurance or life insurance.... you get nothing back unless you need it.

The other thing to think of is a lot of the big unions like Unison have all sorts of benefits for their members, things like cheaper insurance for cars and homes, discounts arranged with suppliers of all sorts of goods.

Imagine how it would be if only the union members got the payrises that the union negotiated.... everyone would join then wouldnt they.

Thats why this country is fucked.. no one wants to help anyone else, everyone is for themselves..

Imagine if we'd had that attitude in 1939..... 'Mr Hitlers coming boys... !!'

'Oh dont worry.. someone else will sort it for me....... I'll just live off the backs of others...'

Think on....... its a small amount to pay.

Ive seen the rise & thankfully the fall of trade unions. Can only start to imagine the state of things now if Mrs Thatcher had not curbed their Powers.

Ian M

I have been in two unions, both crap imo. Besides whats the point in being in a union that represent only a small percentage of the workforce that i stated above? If they have large perecentage and you want to join fair enough got nowt wrong with that.

But imo im not a big fan..

The point is to protect yourself... they have lawyers and experts on hand to give you advice and guidance should you have 'issues' at work.

We'd still have a coal industry for a start and wouldnt be paying a fortune for our electricity because we now have to buy in coal from other countries....

Most large companies dont make the usual mistakes that smaller companies do when doing things like sacking people or making them redundant etc.

Dont worry, most disputes with big companies are settled out of court anyway because the lawyers do deals with people to save companies money.

Because there are a lot fewer unions than there used to be, Super Unions have been created by the smaller ones merging so the legal resources of these unions is immense

But like I say most things like unfair dismissal, racial or sex discrimination cases etc are normally sorted out of court.

And in the case of Mr Punter having a go, its a real David & Goliath thing and most companies will stand their ground and tell the individual to fook off because there is no way most individuals can afford to take a case all the way.

However when a union is involved, employers know that the union are footing the bill and are far more likely to resolve the issue.
