Just been for a test drive in an Evo 9!!
Well im sick of driving around in my company car, and always wishing i was out in the escos............and im sick of the escos being sat in the garage for more than half the year and only coming out on dry sunny weekends
So decieded its time to find something else.......................thought about an Evo 6 TM or even a skyline r33gtr just as a weekend toy but think now im going to go for something new and quick
My local Mitsibushi Ralliart dealer has an Evo 9 fq320 which i took out today. Very nice car but not that quick So once the escos goes ill get myself a blue (maybe yellow) fq340
Just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on these cars and also how do they compare to cossies and and other cars with the same power? I know on the twisties it would be evo all the way but what about on the straights?
I wont be doing track days just be my daily driver doing around 5k a year
Thanks.

MAD RST l would personnally go for the 320 and then Ecutek it unless you really want the Alacantra and sat nav as i beleive that difference is a Unichip piggybacked on to the ECU,
Mike
Oh whats this crap about the Escos sailing past you there will always be quicker cars out there and funnily enough there will always be slower cars out there, but few of them will be as good on bends as a standard out the box Evo ,

Cheers Mike
So are the seats and sat nav the only difference? Apart from a slight power increase!
What do you mean by Unichip piggybacked on to the ECU? And what is Ecutek?
I had always just thought Autronic

As mike said go for the 320 unless you want the leather and sat nav.
400/400 is very easy to come by and not that many cars will go past you. By the time a 400 brake cossie gets on boost you'll be half way down the road in 3rd gear!!!!
An evo is a awesome car to live with and you will never get bored of it as they always surprise you with their capabilities...

Ecutek is a re-flash of your existing ECU were by you have a license for it. The 340 has a Ralliart piggy back ECU if i recall correctly that is a easy way of getting the extra power. it is cheaper to get a 320 and get the extra power then it is to buy a 400
As your name suggests unless i am reading it wrong Mark will take care of you with Autronics he has done quite a few recently that have made great power.
And being a 9 with the MIVEC engine it is even easier to get power from them i.e they make better gains for the same mods then say on a 4g63 engine which is the E8 engine and back.
The 400 Evo is widely considered to be a poorly specced package in that the level of power and delivery can be achived in a better manner and a cheaper manner then the extra cost warrants and the car will drive better of done right, If you check out the MLR they are not popular cars

Mike your a star And yes you are correct with regards the name
Am i correct in thinking that if i bought either a 320 or 340 they would both be easily modded for more power at the same price?

Mate,
For christs sake don't go and buy anything with an FQ badge - so much extra money for such little gain.
Get an 8 MR or a 9 RS and get it tuned - so much better value for money!

Will mine is an 8 MR FQ 320 i dont think you are telling the full picture of the 9 rs unless i am wrong it comes with out quite a few creature comforts does it not, and also it depends on how far he wants to take it power wise the hard pipe kit and HKS stuff is nice on mine and will surfice for the moment for my power demands,
The 9 rs is a trade of if it is like the 6/7/8 rs models

Electric windows and a few other things that you would expect to have, if you are going Autronics dont buy a 340 because it is the ECU that you will be changing so why pay more for a car that has had the ECU played with if you are going to change it any way makes no sense,

what is nice is having a escort cosworth and a evo at the same time
i have had 5-6-7- and a 8 fq300 will probably get a 9 if i see a good deal.
evo's are great cars and the fq had the optional recaro leather
with fq 300 in the headrests, that sold the car to me

Mike, think ill stick to the fq then Thing is, i wont be changing/upgrading straight away, need to make sure im going to keep it first
Plus, the 320 didnt feel that fast...................or should i say not as fast as i had expected!! I know the 340 wont be much quicker but thought as it will be staying standardish for a little bit might as well get the quicker of the two Plus they are the same price

have owned most versions of cossies and evo's, love them both.
if you can afford an evo buy one - you wont regret it, makes even a good cossie feel old and tired now. most fun evo is the rs version, very rare though. the MR evo's are the best so far, try and get one of them, prices now start from Ł15k eg 2004 MR FQ300 VIII. Can easily be tuned to a reliable and useable 360bhp/360lb ft which will destroy almost any Cosworth in the real world having very little lag, amazing handling and bullet proof reliability. beware of big depreciation if you buy a new one though not a good investment new!!

Is it really worth buying a Ł25k evo 9 only to have it depreciate by thousands of pounds every few 6 months. The escos is as good as money in the bank. Would it be worth losing all that money for only 100 miles a week?
Id keep the escos and use it more. I see your point with wanting to keep it nice but at the end of the day you could use that daily and you wont be knocking that much off the value by driving it and only putting 5k on it a year. Makes much more sense to me mate, if not just from a financial point of view.
Id at least go for an evo 6 if your dead set on the idea though as your not going to lose quite as much.
Having said that, if you have money to burn, than get the evo 9 mate.

I know of a couple with 340 and 360 that have had nothing but problems and are both on their second engines after major failures. I suppose it all depends on if you get a good one or not though. Theres always going to be good and bad examples, like with any performance car.
#36
nope dont know of general problems with them, people generaly agree they are reliable.
buy one and try one?
Then come back here (in a few years?) and I hope you will agree I was right.

Seriously though, i was looking at evo 6's before the escos. Excellent cars, just a shame about depreciation.

they sre not cheap but then thats life if you can not afford it then dont buy it, i want a certain red Italian car when i can afford it i will buy it, i dont give a monkeys if the value drops like a brick because i will have thought about that before i buy it,
Mike
Good choice mate on the Evo

Why is it everyone moans about depreciation?? Yes it is a shame but what can you to do about it
As said above, if you cant afford to buy one or/and run one then dont buy one
The escos is such a lovely car, and i will be sooo gutted but there is NO way i am using it everyday, think how dirty it will get And all that mileage going on it No thanks
Mike thanks for your input mate With regards to the two models, 320 and 340, are these both the same to mod?
