its a awesome car, very economical ans quite nice to drive. Pug deisels last forever. only issues he ahs is with electrics.

He ha a escort td before that and it was crap, low milage, one owner and threw a cambelt at 28k fuking the engine. had othing but problems with it thats y he got the pug.

but ford deisels come on along way now and my STTDCi is awesome

my dad has a mondeo estate 2.0l tdci and it pulls like a train, especially good for overtaking and on the motorway. we get easily 46 mpg an thats pretty much fully laden, but not towing.

considering it weighs about 1600Kg its pretty quick and economical. sees 50 mpg most days, just wish they would let me have a go but he cant add me to his insurance as he's with saga and dont let anyone under 21 be added, i'm 18

compare this to a 1.8 focus of which is my mum's an i drive. the focus is lighter (bout 1200 Kg) and 15 BHP less but same performance figures. 0-60 in 10sec and 125 top speed. tbhthough i've had 130mph out of the focus an the modeo could prob beat that. certainly pulls better higher up though. also, in the focus your lucky to see 35mpg as a combined figure.

hope this helps

oh and with a chip reaches the 150BHP mark IIRC

i got a 405 td with 130k on the clock for my run around/ tow car. shes a beast i get around 40 mpg average. she starts a bit lumpy from cold but is soon sweet and drives nicely but gearbox is a bit lumpy. ive had it 3 years and it cost me Ł200 so im well chuffed with it. oh yeah and they like taking the outside edges off the front tyres.

hope this helps

My dad has a TD mondeo. I think it gets 50+mpg. I've driven it once or twice, it goes quite well and brakes seem good. He's had a lot of problems with it though and says its no good for overtaking.

Yeah he needed some odd things on it like an inlet manifold and problems with the chip in the key for the imobiliser. I think stuff like rough running and hard to start.

weird how some cars are always like this throughout their lives. oh well, good luck with it and hope it does get sorted and running sweet as a nut like my dad's

405 shits all over the Mondeo. Take it to Jeremy J Fearne spend Ł150 and watch those Rst's disappear in your rear view mirror.
Only thing to watch is anti freeze or lack of it. the PSA XUD9 likes to be properly cooled and (especially if it's got air con) the cooling system is the only potential area for concern on the whole car as it's operating on it's limit most of the time and without antifreeze it will blow the head gasket.
Bought mine at 48k, JJF pushed power up to 118 bhp at the wheels at 60k
sold it to neighbour 6years later at 195k neighbours still got it and it's done over 220k.
Plus 405 handles better and is far more comfortable.

what is the kerb weight of the 405?

also which mondeo are we on about, mk1 or 2?

if its the older mk1 those engines have seen 150 bhp, not many granted but then not many people tune td but its fairly easily done for little money.

uprated front mounted intercoolers would be needed though on either the mondeo or 405. tbh though i'm sure both engines will see similar powerfor similar money.

also try the derv doctor
