Default Twin pass intercoolers?

I've seen a fair few intercoolers with both inlet and oulet ports on the same side. How does this work? Is there a 180-degree bend in the cores at the opposite end of the cooler, then it sends the air back to where it came in? Doesn't that compromise flow quite heavily? And am I right in thinking these are what are known as "Twin-pass" coolers?

Intercooler core is split into 2, effectively having 2 cores. The end tanks are designed to flow the air upward and then through the second core. Pressure drop is the main concern.

Aye that's the sort of arrangement I envisaged. Must bugger around with flow rate/pressure quite a bit does it? Don't think I have any way round it really...unless it's REALLY performance-sapping and a few hundred quid for a custom rad to allow single pass need to be spent Is it real lag-building territory? Would only be a 200mm x 500mm x 40/50mm cooler, nothing enorrrrrrrrmous.

Just for example, this is the S1 GRS intercooler which I use:

It's twin pass and pressure drops of max ~2psi have been measured to my knowledge. If it concerns you, it's up to you. The highest temps I've seen at 1 bar boost is ~30C.
